“Okay, let’s go inside and find out what’s going on. I’ll help you get to the bottom of it.”

He nodded and took my hand. I stood and opened the door again and led Kayson inside. As he went to hang up his backpack, I moved to the back of the classroom where Ms. Lisa was setting up the reading time area. She looked up and flashed a beautiful smile my way.

“Hello, Mr. Waters. How are you this morning?”

“I’m doing pretty well, but unfortunately, Kayson isn’t.”

Her pretty chocolate face scrunched up, and she asked, “Oh? What seems to be the problem with Kayson?”

“Apparently, he’s feeling left out of the friendship circle these days. He doesn’t seem to be getting along well with Josiah.”

“They’ve always been close, but I’ve noticed a difference, too, lately. They’re not playing together as much, and I’m notsure why. I haven’t noticed anything bad though. Like, I haven’t seen any mean behaviors, no bickering or fighting. They’re just steering clear of each other.”

“He did mention that Josiah wasn’t allowing him to play with his toys when he brings them in, but he allows all the other kids to play with them. I know that we can’t force him to allow anyone to play with his toys, but I was wondering if you might have any insight on how we can handle it?”

She planted her hands on her hips, her face scrunched down, and she tilted her head sideways. Chewing on her bottom lip, she stared off into the distance before she responded. “Not off the top of my head, but let me think about it and get back to you. I’ll keep a closer eye on them today and see if I can’t pick up on what’s going on.”

“Okay, thank you, Ms. Lisa.”

“You’re welcome, Mr. Waters. Have a great day.”

I nodded and turned away from her and headed to Kayson. He rushed to me and threw his arms around me. “Have a good day, buddy. Ms. Lisa is going to help you whenever you need it, okay?”

“Okay, Daddy.”

“Have a great day, Son. I love you.”

“I love you too, Daddy.”

Kayson released me, and I stood. I glanced back at him and saw him playing with a little girl. He was okay for now.

On the drive to work, my mind remained on my little guy the entire time, and I couldn’t help but wonder if there was something more going on with him than I had noticed. I needed to speak with Kali to see if she had noticed anything.

We had joint custody of Kayson. She would drop him off at school on Mondays, and I would pick him up that afternoon. He would remain with me until the following Monday morning, when I would drop him off, and she would pick him up.

I hated that my family had been split the way it had been, but it was no fault of my own. No matter how many times I tried to think about what I could have done differently, I came up empty. I had given everything that I could to my wife, including pitching the idea of counseling, cutting back on my work hours, and opting to work from home more. Nothing could appease her or stop her from serving those divorce papers to me.

My jaw clenched tightly as I tried to push those thoughts from my mind. It was useless. My mood had changed drastically by the time I arrived at the office. I wasn’t in the same space that I had been this morning when I woke up and got Kayson ready for school and myself ready for work.

It hadn’t even been Kayson’s sour mood that had dampened my spirits. Yes, it had made me feel some type of way that my li’l nigga was down in the dumps about what was going on in his little world. But thinking back on how we got here in the first place was what pissed me off. We had started counseling, not to save our marriage but so that we could co-parent better.

I rushed from the parking deck and headed for the office building. I hoped to get inside my office, close and lock the door, and work on specs for materials for a new project we recently won. Luckily, I didn’t have any site visits scheduled for the day. I wasn’t in the mood to deal with people if I didn’t have to.

I smelled her fragrance before I saw her, and I heard the click-clacking of her heels on the marble floors of the lobby as she raced to the elevators. I could set my watch by her—late ass.

Sticking my hand through the opened doors and pressing the elevator button, I smirked as I waited for her to step inside and see who was waiting. When I arrived, I had just missed an elevator going up, and I was the only one who stood at the bank of elevators. There were four elevators.

She stepped onto the elevator, and instantly, her face fell. I saw her disappointment in the slump of her shoulders andthe deep exhale she released. Legacy pressed the button for the twelfth floor and stood close to the doors with her arms crossed at her midsection.

When her computer bag slipped, taking her purse with it, she reached out and tugged it back up.

“I won’t bite, unless you say please,” I teased.

She huffed and remained quiet.

“I can stop the elevator right now and distract you from all your problems.”

She dropped her head and pulled her phone out of the pocket of her slacks. They were an ecru color and fit her ass and hips perfectly. She wore a matching blazer with a fuchsia blouse underneath. The cream and fuchsia pumps she wore almost lifted her fine ass to my height.
