She sits down and tells Penny to head to Alvi’s chair and get set up as she pulls her beanie down over her head. I know she has a shit ton of hair underneath that hat. I had my fingers buried underneath it and would like to fucking get back there. See just how much of a tangled mess she’ll let me make.
She focuses on her laptop again, and her fingers move like she’s on a fucking mission. She clicks on something, and Payton’s voice screams outta the speakers.
“¡Puta madre! ¡Olvidé cuánto odio su voz! (Fucking hell! I forgot how much I hate her voice!)”She says while slamming the top of her computer down, silencing the annoying voice, before digging into her hoodie pocket.
She pulls out her knife and places it on the counter before reaching back in.
“You’re always prepared,” I tell her as she pulls out a pair of earbuds. These are from the Athletic Department; every student athlete was given a pair at some award ceremony a few semesters ago. I don’t want to embarrass her and ask her where she got them. It doesn’t matter, I’ll be getting her her own pair.
“Never know when I might need to hold you at knifepoint or tune you out, hockey boy,” she says with a little smirk that’s mostly a smile. Someone’s warming up to me.
“You’re just like a Girl Scout.” The frown on her face is her typical response when we play my new favorite game, which I like to call‘How many of Ed’s buttons can I press today?’
“There weren’t many Girl Scout troops in the hood, cabrón,” she mutters. She shoves the buds into her ears and shuts me out when she opens up her computer, but eyes me over the edge of her screen, and I can tell she’s smiling.
“So you and the tutor?” Drew asks from the leather couch that’s pressed up against the wall. I leave her to her research and take a seat next to him.
“So you and Max’s sister?” I counter. Like I said, I like Drew, but he’s gonna have to eat a little shit with this. Especially from me, considering Max has started calling mylittlesister, “wifey.” At this rate, she’s probably already signing shit as Evie Harmon. I’m happy for them, but it’s still fucking weird to see him all over her. And that fucker is all over her all the fucking time.
“It’s not like that.”
“Oh yeah, what’s it like then?”
“Complicated. She wants things that I’m not sure that I can give her.”
“Can’t or won’t?”
“I really don’t know. I haven’t been in this situation in a long time. Before this, it didn’t work out the way I thought it would.” Now that I think about it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him with a girl before. I’ve seen him talk to them, but never anything more than that.
“I’m not good at this shit, man, I don’t want to tell you the wrong fucking thing, but if you’re into her, you should try to figure it out.” I don’t know what else to really say to him.
“Is that what you’re doing? With your math tutor, who also just so happened to save your sister’s life? You figuring it out too?”
“I already have, man.”
“You idiots done with your girl-talk?” Ed asks, and Drew looks pale. “Don’t worry, I’m not gonna say shit to your girl overthere. I know who you are; you’re friends with Evie. So you get a pass tonight.”
“She’s my sister, what do I get?” I ask and raise my eyebrows at her.
“It’s not like that,” Drew whines and holds up his hands like he’s innocent.
“Nothing, pendejo, you getna-da,” she responds and adds a head shake that makes my nut sack tingle.
“We haven’t done anything. I mean, I want to, but we, I don’t know, it’s –,” Drew says as he continues to defend himself to literally no one. I forgot he was there while I was looking at her.
“Complicated. Yeah, I heard that part too.” She says while using air quotes around the word.
“Very. It’s very complicated,” he sounds like he’s in over his head.
“No, it’s fucking not, just tell her how you feel and be truthful about what’s going on. Maybe get some flowers or some shit? Don’t girls like that?” Her eyes narrow, and she looks at him like he’s an idiot and should already know this.
“What about you, Ed? You like that shit?”Tell me, hermosa.
“Are you asking if I like an honest man? That’s a dumb question, even for you.”Such a savage.
“Flowers, you demon.”
“Only if they’re black,” she says with a smug smile while her eyes spark with amusement. “Pero,I prefer peanut butter, Nutella, and sharp objects.”This girl. Fucking hell, this girl.
