“Thank you, now I’ve got to get going, I’m awfully late for my class. I appreciate you breaking my fall like that. Thanks again, sugar.” I try to step around him to get on my way but he smiles and shifts to the side and checks his smart watch.

“It’s already too late for you to get credit for going to your class. Have coffee with me instead.” He’s got the right amount of flirt, and sweet going on that probably gets him whatever hewants. I could see how it would be easy for girls to immediately say yes. But I’m not one of ‘em.

“That’s awfully sweet, but I really have to go. I’ll see ya around.” I smile and he lets me pass. I swear on the sun I hear him say, “oh you can count on it,” but I’m not really sure since students are coming out of the building now. I must have completely missed my class. I’m gonna have to email my professor and explain that I was having a morning that Hades himself would consider to be hellish.

I don’t want to chance being late to my meeting at the HH and hurry on toward where I need to be next. It’s just my luck that I see several backwards Havenwood Hockey Devils hats walking about ten feet ahead of me. I scan the hats for number 5 and easily find it in the middle of their pack.

I watch him walk with his popularity on full display. He might’ve lost some weight, but Chase Wilton’s bubble butt is still as juicy as ever.

He doesn’t miss a beat as a group of girls say hello to him and the rest of the campus hockey gods. I’m instantly furious when I watch him effortlessly talk to a pretty brunette.

I dig my finger nails into my skin, making a fist so tight my wrists hurt. I never get this side of him. All I get is stolen glances, outward stares, squaring off with guys who dare try to dance with me, and heated gazes that set my skin on fire and have me thinking and dreaming of dirty things that I want him to do to me.

I don’t like how this makes me feel watching him talk to this pretty brunette with ease, especially when I don’t get his words. I don’t like these girls slinking up to him. Evie calls them puck bunnies. I call them thirsty turtles. Call them what you will, I don’t like the lot of them.

Some sort of unpleasant sound involuntarily releases from me and I’ve gotta say, I sound like a wounded animal as thescreech leaves my body when I see her hand snake around his bicep and she attaches herself to him. One of those landmines goes off and the shrapnel rips me open. Why is he letting her touch him? Am I convincing myself that there’s something between us when there’s really not?

I’m firmly planted several feet behind them and getting all types of mad.Kindly go and shake your bunny tail elsewhere.I can see Chase’s ears on the outside of that backwards hat twitch when I squeal again.Good.

Jake turns around when he hears my discontent for the harem surrounding Chase and raises his chin to me, acknowledging my presence and I return the gesture since my hands are otherwise occupied and squeezed tight at my sides.

The buzz from my pocket vibrates through my jealous haze, and I read the message from my brother. He must of saw green smoke rising from wherever he is on campus and decided to check in on his nutty sister.

Davis:

Good luck at your meeting, wanna grab supper later?

I swear that boy is always hungry. Havenwood had no idea what they were getting themselves into giving Davis Higgins an all you can eat meal plan. I text him back, letting him know that I’m at rehearsal during dinner and nearly drop my phone when I see the time.

I need to put some pep in my step and get a move on. I’ve been dilly dallying as it is and can’t stop looking at that pesky brunette. She’s got her hand gripped around his biceps and he visibly flinches when she moves closer to him.

Jake is positioned on the outside of their group and I walk on the right hand side of him, he gently grabs my arm as I pass him and he whispers,

“These girls don’t measure up to you. He knows that.” I lean over and kiss his cheek in gratitude for the kindness that he always shows me. I can almost hear teeth grind from Jake’s other side.Serves ya right, hockey player.

“Thank you, sugar.” I walk past them all and offer a wave before heading straight for the building that houses the Herald.

I don’t have to look back to know he’s staring at me, I know he is and look over my shoulder at him just in time to see him sticking his hands out in front of him to keep that dumb bunny away.Good boy.

But he’s not the only man I see staring. From behind the group of Devils, I see burning blue eyes narrowing when they collide with mine. He salutes me off before turning away to walk back up towards other buildings.I guess I did hear him right after all when he said he’d be seeing me soon.

Chapter Thirteen

WHENIACCEPTEDmy presidential nomination for the next Omega Executive Council, I knew I’d do whatever was necessary to win this year's Hunt. Losing is not a motherfucking option. My father and eldest brother are Havenwood legacies and my older brother, Darren, is our current President. Our cousin is President of his chapter at Coastal. It’s in my fucking blood. It’s what Harris men do.

I’ve done my time and I’ve made myself known to the brothers since I was a freshman. I’ve done their bidding and kicked and kissed asses for them. I made it past the first vote and now it’s time to fucking win.I want my fucking paddle.

Every spring, the frats and sororities hold elections for the following term to select their candidates for their Executive Councils. All brothers vote to pick the top three men for each open position. This year, Omega has all four seats up for grabs with twelve of us grappling for the roles of Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President, and President.

Once selected, it’s not uncommon for each candidate to attach himself to brothers who will have his back during the Hunt. Allegiances have been set, alliances formed, and promises made. I’ve had my boys with me since we rushed as freshman and we’ve been preparing for this. They all know what’s at fucking stake here.

Each rank holds a specific checklist of tasks to be completed by mid-semester. We’re already a week into this shit and I’ve barely crossed off ten items. I need to up my fucking game and focus on the top task.

The Executive Council and active alumni pick out girls for us to pursue. They’re connections and matches they think will be good for the Omega network and our reputation. For brothers who are serious about their place among the Omega ranks, they take their girls seriously.

They understand their purpose and the role they can play. These girls are usually from families that Omega wants to tie themselves too, even if it's temporary. Omega men think ahead; it's not about right now, it's about what happens next. And Sloane Higgins is a means to an end. She’s what I need for right now.

When I was given the list I automatically looked for the girls who would be worth the most points and scanned overtheir bonus challenges. I already knew that the top girl would be fucking impossible. No one ever got near Serafina Rossi. I wasn’t about to waste my fucking time on her. She could be someone else’s problem.
