Just when I decided to drop the topic, he surprised me by grabbing my hand. He used my index finger to trace the heathen creature’s face. Possessive eyes met mine. “Leopards are the stealthiest of the big cats and one of my favorites. No one realizes when a leopard’s around while it quietly stalks its prey to learn everything. By the time it decides to strike, it’s a lethal attack.”

My gaze flickered to the tattoo. Under the dim car light, I faintly made out the face of the animal, which could somewhat resemble a leopard.

However… “The leopard’s ears are totally fucked up. Barely looks like a leopard. Did you piss off the tattoo artist halfway through?”

“What do you think?”

Knowing him… “Definitely pissed them off.”

He didn’t confirm, nor did he deny it. Annoyed, I coerced him into opening up about other things.

“Have you had sex with anyone else in this car?”

“No.”

“How many women have you fucked without a condom?”

“Only the ones I like.”

“But you don’t like anyone.”

“I like you.”

Once more, Brandon answered a question without truly explaining himself. He had only fucked me without a condom.

After that, I stopped asking questions. Instead, I found myself sharing real pieces of my life with him once more. No longer did I expect him to fix things for me or make it all better. I simply wanted him to listen.

“I was thinking about visiting Milo in California.”

Brandon fingers froze amidst stroking my hair. Heavy breathing still filled the car in the aftermath of our tryst, making my announcement sound louder than intended. A sheen of sweat covered my naked back as he restarted his efforts on my hair. “You were?”

“Yeah,” I spoke with my cheek resting against his bicep. “For winter break.”

“That’s a good idea,” he said. The words sounded sincere, but Brandon’s easy concurrence generally meant the opposite.

I straightened to meet his gaze. “If you have anything up your sleeve—”

“I think you should visit him,” he cut me off.

I narrowed my eyes, unconvinced. I had assumed Brandon would prefer it if I limited my interactions with Milo. “What’s your play here?”

He shrugged. “It’ll be good for you to visit Milo. You miss him.”

My heart warmed. I had been struggling over the Milo situation for months. Brandon noticed. His perceptiveness surprised me at times.

“When do you want to leave?”

I blinked.

Of course, there was a catch. Brandon had been agreeable because he planned to be there to supervise and ensure I didn’t go back on my word.

I blew out a long breath. “You’re not coming with me.”

“Then you’re not going.”

Our seemingly calm night took a sharp turn. Shoving off him, I started gathering my clothes.

Brandon appeared unperturbed by my dismissal. “Let’s leave right after Christmas.”
