He nodded. “California.”

I expected Brandon to leave for California, but I foolishly assumed he’d inform me. What I hadn’t expected was for him to leave without a word, especially after… well, after pursuing me for days with mini breakfast dates.

How did he manage to reject me while actively pursuing me?

I turned toward the door and threw over my shoulders, “Good for you. I hope you like California. Remember, during earthquakes, always stand next to a window or furniture that isn’t nailed to the wall.”

Brandon yanked me back and spun me in place, scorching me with a murderous expression. Someone else might have said,That’s the last thing you should do during an earthquake.Brandon was much too clever. He went for the kill, for he understood my insinuation. The hold around me was tight, and he appeared to exert immense control not to squeeze me harder.

“This was a last-minute decision,” he growled.

The words were out of my mouth before I could think. “Well, I wish you had informed me earlier so I could have put the finishing touches on your farewell gift. I’m writing you a book. It’s easily flammable for your convenience.” Damnit. How did our arguments always circle back to this?

Brandon made a frustrated noise in the back of his throat. “I wanted to tell you in person after I finished packing.”

The amount of relief at the one-liner he fed me was frustrating. Brandon never explained himself and had implied moving to California in the future. I didn’t realize future meant this instant.

“Doesn’t matter. You don’t owe me an explanation.”

A shadow crossed Brandon’s face, a dark threat flashing in his eyes. “I might notoweyou an explanation. You are still getting one.”

It was an olive branch. Brandon wasn’t offering information out of an unspoken obligation. He was too much of an asshole to care if he hurt my feelings. Strangely enough, it made his gestures authentic. He wasn’t explaining himself out of the kindness of his heart, but rather, hewantedto share. I paused, waiting for him to continue.

“Milo asked me to drive him to California and help set up the new office. He has too much shit to take on a flight.”

My parents had mentioned that Milo was temporarily relocating to California to oversee JAMBA’s new branch. Perhaps he needed more distance after his breakup with Raven. It wasn’t lost on me that if Milo was taking enough possessions, requiring him to drive a car rather than fly, it wasn’t a temporary move. But I didn’t comment on it or probe Brandon about Milo. He had no clue what happened between us, and I planned to keep it that way.

“It shouldn’t take too long to get the office running.” Brandon unsettled me next with a comment from left field. “So, we’ll have to speak virtually.”

“Virtually?”

He laughed at my perplexed face. “I’ll Facetime you while I’m gone.”

“While you’re gone?” I blinked, surprised. “But aren’t you moving to California, too?”

Brandon gave me long look before confirming, “No.”

My stomach dropped. Why did he change his mind about moving to California? And why would Brandon drive Milo to California if not to relocate? Brandon wouldn’t tolerate anyone’s uninterrupted company for a three-day drive, let alone my brother’s. They had a love-hate relationship at best. My brain screamed that Brandon had an ulterior motive, but my mouth could only utter two words. “How come?”

A smile played on his lips. “I don’t have any furniture that nails to the wall. And I have a bad habit of standing next to windows.” He grazed my cheek with the back of his hand.

I couldn’t speak, staring at him like a wide-eyed idiot. I didn’t protest this time when he closed in, taking my lips for a bruising kiss.

When his hard length dug into my stomach—thrumming with impatience—an alarm set off in my brain. I broke the kiss. “Are you insane?” I tried to break free, though his firm hold kept me in place. “Not here.”

He trailed his lips to my cheek. “I reacted poorly,” he whispered. “So, I gave you space. But I can’t wait any longer. I knew I couldn’t shut it off after going down this road again.” He dropped his head to kiss my shoulder. “This is happening either here or in my car. It’s parked outside. Choose.”

His body vibrated with the intensity of his words; we were about to have sex and the only choice I had in the matter was either his car or this house.

Without allowing me the time to process, an impatient Brandon knelt between my thighs and made the decision for me. He pulled my leggings down, taking my panties with them, and grabbed my ass to yank me closer to his mouth. His breath tickled against my pussy, drawing out a sound of anticipation. Sticking his tongue out, he leaned in for a taste.

“Fuck,” I hissed, grabbing onto his shoulders.

His tongue slid between my folds and circled my clit with my wetness. With a quick maneuver, he spun me in place. Before I could ask him what he was doing, Brandon parted my cheeks and his tongue slid to my crevice. “Oh, my God.” I fell forward, barely managing to lay my palms flat against the door. Luckily, Alexa and Jaci moved out, so there wasn’t a soul in sight to bear witness to the lewd noises.

When he pressed his tongue against the rim of my puckered hole, I blindly reached back and snaked my fingers into his thick hair.

“You like that?” he murmured.
