She felt like she was walking on clouds. As though nothing could touch or hurt her.
Hayes had dressed her in one of his oversized T-shirts. Well, they weren’t oversized on him. But on her, the bottom came down to just above her knees.
It swamped her and there was plenty of room for her arm.
She glanced around at the packages that he must have left in the living room.
“Sit down,” he told her. “I’m going to get you a glass of water and another bandage for your cheek.”
“I think we’re supposed to get some air on it, aren’t we? It’s probably been under a bandage for long enough.” He’d been changing the bandage each day and applying some cream while not letting her look underneath.
Probably a smart choice. But she was feeling stronger now. More capable of coping with things.
Hayes loved her.
It was like a dream come true. One she never wanted to wake up from.
“All right.” He eyed her with concern, but whatever he saw made him nod. “Sit while I get you a drink.”
She stared at the packages with interest as she sat on the sofa. When he returned he held a sippy cup. On the front was a squirrel.
“What’s this?”
“A sippy cup for you. I’ve had it for a couple of days. I want you to drink all of that while I open these.”
Hmm. A sippy cup seemed a slightly odd choice after he’d just fucked her brains out. But it was cute.
As he opened up the packages, things became clearer. Inside, she saw that he’d bought a baby bottle, pacifier, and bib, all with squirrels on them. Three pairs of fluffy socks in pink or yellow. Her period had finished, but fluffy socks were the sort of thing that could be worn all of the time.
Well, maybe not in the height of summer.
There was also a box of Lego. It was Cinderella’s castle and it was epic. A couple of coloring books. She’d already made a start on the ones that had been in her welcome basket. Some colored clay that made her hesitate. But it was the sort for children that was colored and softer and not like the clay she worked with.
Still, she felt that familiar pang.
There were also two onesies. One was a soft yellow with white buttons and the other a pale pink with black buttons. Both of them had a dropseat.
Sheesh.
The last things he drew out were a thick yellow jacket with white fluff around the hood and cuffs, white fluffy mittens, a hat, and a scarf.
“These are adorable!” she cried.
The more he unpacked, the further she slipped into Little headspace.
“Do you like everything, baby?”
“Uh-huh. Well, not sure about the bib, baby bottle and pacifier, Daddy. I is a big girl.”
“Not sure about that. I did think about buying a potty.”
“Nooo!” She stomped her foot on the floor.
“What was that?” he asked, pointing to her foot.
“That was Devi putting her foot down,” she told him, pointing at him. “No potty, Daddy!”
“If Daddy thinks you need a potty, then that’s what you’ll be getting, Little girl,” he told her firmly.
