I blink a few times just to make sure I’m seeing what I really am.
Is Jayne really halfway out the back window? Flailing and climbing about like a kitten.
“What the fuck?!” I shout, and she has the nerve to roll her eyes at me. Like I’m the one at fault here. I kick my bike stand down and rush around the front of the motel so I can get into the room.
Zero stands when he sees me, ready to give me his report, but his report is shit right now because I know he isn’t doing his job as well as he should be. On the way into the room, I see what looks to be an empty cup of coffee. That must be how she got him to let down his guard. That charm is going to get her killed one day.
I’ll have to deal with him at a later time. Right now, I have to pull Jayne out of a small-ass window.
I slam the door open and stomp my way to the bathroom where Jayne is still hanging out, her wide hips not allowing her to just slip out.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” I yell as I grab hold of her jeans and pull her backward.
“Spike, we good?” Zero calls in from the doorway.
“It’s fine. Stay out there.” I shout back.
I hear the front door close just as I get Jayne’s feet back on the floor.
“You can’t keep me hostage in here. I have to go.” Jayne narrows her gaze on me, and I bark a quick laugh.
“Are you fucking serious? You think I want to keep you hostage in here? What part of this is for your own good do you not understand? The last time I checked you were the one who came to my club looking for help. Was that all bullshit?”
She folds her hands over her chest and looks away from me, actually having the gall to look annoyed.
“No, it wasn’t bullshit, but I didn’t know asking for help would mean keeping me locked up in a room alone with someone I don’t know standing in front of my door like I’m some sort of criminal.” She snaps.
My mouth opens to retort, but I have no comeback for that. What she’s saying is true. She doesn’t know Zero like that. Maybe Leo was right.
Finally getting my wits about me, I grab her hand and pull her back to the main room.
“It shouldn’t matter who is in front of your door. I already told you that you were not to leave this room.”
“You don’t understand. I have to go.” She pulls back as if she’s going to try to go for the window again.
“What don’t I understand? Did something happen while I was away?” A million and one scenarios fly through my head.Did Xavier manage to get in contact with her? Is he threatening her?
The rage and protectiveness I feel for Jayne is unwelcome, but there’s nothing I can do about it right now.
“No, I mean not really. It’s just that one of the girls I was trying to help finally came around. She didn’t want to go before, but she called me this morning and told me she’s ready to make a run for it. She’s waiting on me to help her get out of there.”
She was going to go right back to the scene of the crime, so to speak, simply because some woman she didn’t know asked her to?
“How fucking stupid can you be?” I shout down at her.
Jayne’s head snaps in my direction, and I can read the anger clouding her features.
“Don’t you dare call me stupid. I’m doing what I know is right. I’m going to help that woman because I promised I would and because she is asking for help.”
“Right, right. Now tell me this. Did it ever dawn on you that this cry for help was just another way for Xavier to get you right back where he wanted you? You’re about to run into a fucking trap, and you’re too stuck in your superman complex to realize it.”
Jayne shoves me hard and I stumble back a step.
“Don’t you dare. I don’t have a damn complex. It’s not my fault that you’re spineless and have never helped anyone unless it meant you or your club came up.”
“Spineless?” I parrot the insult back at her.
“That’s what I said, isn’t it?” She rolls her neck and glares at me.
