Morning wood.

Everyone knows it happens, but no one ever talks about how painful it can be if there’s no release.

I spent all night both asleep and awake fantasizing about Jayne, no matter how hard I tried not to.

I’ve spent the better part of the last couple of years doing everything in my power to keep Jayne out of my head, but last night it was like she never left. Image after image of how we used to be together assaulted my mind.

I refused to bring myself pleasure with her face in my memory. Now I’m stuck here with this raging hard-on and nothing to do but get my day started.

A day that was sure to bring more of Jayne into my life.

Great.

I push myself out of the bed and slide on my jeans before I walk out into the main area.

Blinking a few times, I adjust my eyes to the stream of sunlight. My goal is the kitchen, to get something in my system before I make my way over to the hotel.

It’s not in the cards for me.

Before I even make it halfway across the main area, I see Rumble and Virus rushing over to me. The grim look on their faces lets me know they were able to find out some information. It’s looking more and more like information I’m not going to like.

“What is it?” I question, my gaze bouncing between the two of them.

“Brother, your ex sure knows the wrong trees to bark up at.” Virus shakes his head before standing in front of me with his arms crossed over his chest.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”

Rumble is the one who answers. “It means out of all the groups Jayne could have made enemies out of, the Burning Souls might have just been the absolute worst one.”

“They have a lot of connections? What?” The longer it takes for them to tell me what’s going on, the more anxious I become.

“Something going on?” Leo groans as he makes his way in our direction from his room.

Rumble and Virus give me a look before turning to address Leo.

“Yeah, I’d say. We found out that the Burning Souls are basically the merchants of the fucking underworld. They’ve got ties in just about every syndicate and cartel, along with some really dubious players overseas. They pride themselves on being able to get their hands on whatever they are asked for, but their main money maker is the capture and sale of women. So far the authorities have been looking into them, but there’s never enough evidence to convict any of them, and so far no one has ever been stupid enough to rat on them. It’s like they’re ghosts.”

“Fuck. We don’t have the manpower to deal with them.” Leo shakes his head and looks at me pointedly.

“That’s an understatement.” Virus scoffs.

“You said they capture and sell women. That’s it? Just a big kidnapping ring?”

“I wish.” Rumble sighs before he continues. “They torture them. Brainwash them. Some of the victims have shown up with half their faces burned off by acid simply because the person buying them didn’t want them to be too pretty.”

Bile rises in my throat as I listen to all the different ways these women were terrorized and abused.

“They’re never going to let her walk away, especially if they think she owes them something.” I shake my head and try to think of anything I can do to get Jayne out of this mess.

“Right now I’m not worried about the other women. Just hide Jayne away somewhere. If they can’t find her, they’ll stop looking eventually. It looks like Jayne is going off the grid for a long while.” Leo shrugs his shoulders and makes it look like he’s turning around.

“No, that won’t work.” I hear the words as they come out of my mouth. I don’t know why I chose right now to speak up, but it feels like if I don’t, a piece of me is going to curl up and die.

“Why the hell not?” Leo turns to look at me.

“Jayne might be safe, but those other women?—”

“You didn’t hear me the first time? We can’t save them all.”
