“I sort of made up a fake girlfriend.”

“No!”I screeched, cackling suddenly with laughter. “Youdidn’t! You’re kidding, right? And you want me to…”

Kirk winced. “I’m afraid so.”

I just kept laughing.

“Sorry, I…look, don’t feel obligated at all, but I just remember how you and the other cheerleaders used to pull pranks and jokes like that on people all the time, and I just thought maybe there was a chance you’d think it would be sort of a…fun misadventure, with free food. And besides, you’re new in Seattle, and you can meet people, and did I mention the mashed potatoes? I mean, I don’t know what my grandma puts in them, but they’re—”

I giggled and shook my head at Kirk’s needless embarrassment. “It’s okay,” I said. “Really. I’d love to come. It sounds fun, and just about crazy enough.”

“I look forward to it,” I said, calming myself down after all those long minutes of laughing. Kirk waved goodbye to me and turned around to go, leaving me alone in my office with a stack of paperwork that was unfortunately still endless, and what felt like a thousand giddy and confused thoughts suddenly racing through my head.

Was this a date? Did Kirk somehow think that if I pretended to be his girlfriend for a day I would suddenly think that being his real girlfriend was a great idea too? I was a bit taken aback by the invite, especially because I still suspected Kirk was holding a bit of a grudge against me. I thought about driving up to Kirk’s parent’s house, all bundled up in scarves, about pretending to snuggle up with him on the couch while his relatives fawned over us. The more I thought about it, the more fun it sounded.

I grabbed the next paper off the stack and began to excitedly make notes on it with my pen, a brisk feeling of excitement running through my veins.
