“Baby, stop,” I squealed and laughed when he pulled me into his lap. “I have to go.”

I was smiling and blushing so hard with how he was eyeing me. Javyous always made me feel like the most beautiful woman in the world.

“Where do you have to go? I thought we were chilling until we drop the twins off with your grandmother.”

“I know, but Ms. Cheryl asked me to meet with her at Allen & Allen. Any idea what that’s about?”

“Naw,” he answered before kissing my neck. “But hurry back so you can get Jocelyn ready.”

Javyous had not let up with that. He didn’t like the thought of bathing her and getting her dressed. He was adamant aboutthat being my job. I wanted to blame it on the fact that she wasn’t his biological child, but he assured me that if we had a daughter he wouldn’t be bathing her and changing her either. He was exaggerating but I understood.

“I have all of her stuff situated already so tell her to shower when she gets up. I’ll be back soon, baby,” I said before kissing his lips then rushing out before he could get me caught up again.

I was hella nervous the entire ride to the lawyer’s office. I was good, Javyous was good, my kids were perfect, business was on the up and up. I literally couldn’t think of what they would have needed me for.

Pulling up to my location, I parked and sent a text to JV letting him know that I had made it and to my best friend before turning my focus on because I knew that she would be blowing me up. Killing the engine, I tossed my keys and phone into my purse, exited my car, and journeyed inside the building to the office that I heard all of the voices coming from.

“Hello.” I tapped on the door to gain everyone’s attention. In the office was Ms. Cheryl, Bryce, and who I assumed to be Miles.

“Damn,” the unknown man said when he looked my way and Bryce elbowed him as the two of them stood.

“Kehlani.” Ms. Cheryl smiled and walked over to pull me into a hug. “This isMrs.Goldsmith, guys.” She introduced me putting emphasis on my title to let them know was happily married. “And Lani this is Miles, you’ve met Bryce.”

“Pleasure to meet you.” I smiled and shook each of their hands before taking a seat in the only empty chair in the room.

“Pleasure’s all mine, beautiful,” Miles flirted and I rolled my eyes. He was a very attractive man, but thirsty. I was clearly in a relationship and the man looked like he wanted to jump my bones.

“Miles sit down and leave the woman alone, bruh. I can’t wait to tell Vette about your ass,” Bryce said and frowned.

“Chill,” Miles said, completely switching gears. It was obvious that thisVetteperson obviously didn’t play.

“Anyway, thank you for coming on such short notice, Kehlani.”

“No problem.” I nodded with a smile. “If you don’t mind me asking, what is this about? I’ve been anxious since I got the text this morning.”

“I can only imagine.” Bryce laughed. “I had Ms. Cheryl ask you to come through because I got some good news for you. Javyous hit us up and asked us to look into your father and his case. You haven’t talked to him in…” He paused to look down at his notes. “Almost a year?”

“Right, m-me and my grandma.” I was a little shocked because I honestly thought Javyous had forgotten all of this since he’d never mentioned it again but leave to my man to always come through. He was for sure going to get some for his efforts.

“Gotcha, now I did look into that and him not reaching out was strictly by choice. He did go to confinement for a while, but since his release he’s has access to phones.”

“W-what?” I asked in disbelief. “Why would hechooseto not talk to me and my grandma?”

“I don’t know shorty, but I can only imagine how hard it is to both talk to you and not to. He’s been in there for a minute.”

“Right,” I said barely above a whisper. I was extremely sad to learn that he purposely wasn’t speaking to me. I loved my father and missed him so much.

“Tell her something good, bro, she looks like she’s about to fucking break,” Miles suggested.

“Right, okay, JV hit me up to see what I could do for him, so I did some research. What we can start by doing is looking into a compassionate release.”

“A what?”

“A compassionate release,” he repeated. “It’s basically where we argue saying that the prisoner, your father in this case, had a very compelling reason for doing what he did and file a motion with the court asking for a shorter sentence or better, that he be released.”

“Really?” I beamed through tears. “We can do that? You guys can do that?”

“Yeah, we can and we will.” They both nodded. “I got a little girl myself and I would have done the same thing with no hesitation for her.”
