He searched her eyes and shook his head slowly. “I don’t know why. The women I’ve met haven’t measured up. I’ve never met anyone that…” He broke off.
“That what?”
He drew a deep breath and tossed his head sideways like he was in pain. “Shit.”
She thought she understood, but she wanted to be sure. “Tell me. I need to hear it.”
“It’s you. What more can I say?”
“Details, please. If I’ve fucked this up, I want to know why and how.”
“You haven’t messed anything up,” he said. “But you’ve set the bar damn high. I’ve wanted to take a mate and maybe the accidental partial-bond has made it impossible. Yet, every time I’d meet a woman, or considered one of the wolves from my pack as a potential wife, I’d compare them to you. I don’t know anyone who created a counseling center for her kind for the sole reason she had the idea and went for it.
“Then there’s this,” he continued, squeezing her tight. “I’m so attracted to you. But why did you have to be a vampire?”
She smiled through new tears. “Why did you have to be a wolf?”
He leaned down and kissed her and that’s when she knew they’d be making love again, nothing held back despite there was no hope for a future together.
