My new cell phone rings and I answer without looking at the caller ID.I know it’s Laine because no one else has this number.
“Why don’t you just come home?”he asks.
It’s the same question he asks every day and I never answer him.I no longer have a home.
“How is she doing?”
“She is pissed off,” he replies with a chuckle.“We had dinner last night and she made her feelings clear.Be happy you’re not here, or you would have lost you balls.”
I smile but it feels off.
“Just...”
“What, Alistair? You know that you’re the only person that can fix this.”
“There’s no fixing this, Laine.I can’t take back what I’ve done.”
“Just come home.”His anger bleeds through.“We all miss you.”
“I’ll talk to you tonight.”
I end the call and rub at my chest. But it doesn’t do anything for the pain.

I went to work today.
I stood behind the counter and smiled like a doll with a painted face.
My heart still hurts.
But now I’m fueled by anger.
