“No way. I freaking love my house. My parents are amazing.”

“Well, good for you.”

“And I’ve never been in love.”

“What about with a hot, brooding vampire?”

“You mean a fictional one?”

I shrug. “Whatever.”

She smirks. “Sure. Three of them. But I wouldn’t run away with any of them.”

“Okay. Well, is there anything in life that you feel passionate about that you feel you couldn’t live without?”

She blinks. “Reading, I guess.”

“Okay, good. What if your father was ordering you to give up books for the rest of your life, and it was the law to obey your father? The only options he and the king are giving you are: never read books again or be locked in a room with nothing but a pamphlet about Jesus to read for the rest of your life? Would you run away from home to find a library to live in then?”

She laughs. “Are you seriously suggesting that I think of Josh K. as a library that I can live in?” We both look over at the lanky nerd who’s frantically shoving a chocolate chip muffin into his mouth before the break is over.

“I’m just trying to help you find a way into the character. Give me a break here…”

She balls her hands up into fists. “Okay, why don’t you just tell me what it’s like to be in love, since you obviously totally are.”

“What? What’s obvious? Shut up.” I cover my mouth and giggle. My cheeks are warm. It’s so dumb.

She nudges my knee with hers. “Tell me about your boooyyyyfriend!”

I fucking love those words. My stupid heart does a little dance, and I can’t stop smiling. Wes Carver is my boyfriend!“Okay, I’ll tell you about him, but let’s go over there where no one can hear us.”
