I barely noticed how the students stood up when I entered. Matthew’s sister rushed towards me, but I sidestepped her, my patience non-existent at this point. My gaze narrowed in on where the scent was coming from.

I saw Kylie, her hair pulled back from her face, her bright blue eyes hopeful as they met mine. The smell seemed to come from her. I rushed across the space between us, but I still didn’t feel drawn to her. Then I noticed someone kneeling down behind Kylie, gathering up a mess of papers.

I moved Kylie aside, looking down at the source of the smell, but all I saw was the top of her head, covered in thick, cascading auburn hair. From here, I could smell she was human. I pushed away the shock and confusion and growled. “Mine.”

She looked up, and I met her beautiful, dark blue eyes. Her features were delicate, and her pink lips parted as she stared up at me. I held out my hand, sparks dancing when she took it and we touched for the first time.

I was grateful she already knew about werewolves, as I didn’t know if I could hold my wolf back for long. I couldn’t wait to get her alone so I could mark and mate her. Goddess help anyone who tried to stand in my way.

CHAPTER5

Emma

Almost a week had passed since arriving at Gray Rock, and my life was falling into a routine. I spent two hours first thing in the morning learning about werewolf history and pack law, followed by a few hours listening to guest lecturers talk about the work they did in the pack.

After eating lunch with my new friends, I would train with Roger, who Beta Matthew had tapped to help me catch up to the rest of the students in fighting. I spent evenings with Kylie, who was becoming one of my best friends. It didn’t make me miss Gina any less, but it made her absence that much more bearable.

Right now, Kylie was laughing at me as my weary arms dropped my bag by the cafeteria table, spilling the contents on the floor. I groaned and kneeled by the table, my aching muscles protesting the movement.

“I can’t wait for the weekend. Two whole days for my body to recover. Do you think I can convince your brother to take it easy on me this afternoon?”

“Not likely. Beta Matthew told him to get you up to speed as quickly as possible. Roger is taking it as a challenge.”

Kylie started to kneel down to help me pick up my belongings, but she quickly reversed and stood up. I shrugged and continued to scoop up my notebooks.

Black shoes appeared in front of me, and I registered the absolute silence in the cafeteria, which was broken by a growl and a deep male voice. “Mine.”

The voice belonged to an incredibly handsome man with deep chocolate brown eyes and light brown hair cut in a short, shaggy style. His shoulders were broad, and the way he filled out his stylish gray suit made it obvious he had muscles.

He held out his hand to me, and on instinct I took it, taking my time to stand up. He had to be a foot taller than my five and a half feet. Sparks traveled where our skin met.

I only realized I’d been staring at him with my mouth open when I heard a screech from across the cafeteria. “You have got to be kidding. She’s a human. I’m supposed to be your mate.”

The man let out a loud growl in Lisa’s direction and pulled me closer, bending down and nestling his face in the crook of my neck. He took a deep breath in and brushed his lips across my skin. I struggled to hold back a moan of pleasure.

Then I was in the air and my stomach landed on his shoulder as he strode out of the cafeteria. Soon we were exiting the school, striding past a shocked Clarissa and Lora who were standing outside the office.

“Where are you taking me?” I came to my senses enough to form words, though it was hard with my body pressed against his. The heat radiating from him was very distracting and warmed my insides.

“To my place.”

“What? Why?”

“I thought privacy would be best for marking and mating.”

I could feel the laughter as it rumbled through his body, but it stopped as soon as I spoke. “Who said I wanted you to mark and mate me?”

He came to a stop and let my body slide down his, his arms tightening around my waist as my feet touched the ground. “That’s what mates do.”

“In case you didn’t notice, I’m human.”

“I’ve noticed everything about you.” His low, husky voice made me shiver. He reached around me and opened a car door. “At the very least, we should go somewhere private to talk.”

“Just talk?”

He nodded, sincerity radiating from him. “I won’t do anything you don’t want. You’re my mate. I will never hurt you.”

I didn’t know the man in front of me, but for some reason, I believed his words. I had a feeling of safety with him. But I also felt not safe, as if my instincts knew that he would change everything.
