“I don’t need any ammunition against me other than the obvious human thing.” I tried to think of ways to win over the pack. “I need to learn about being a Luna, but I doubt Tobias’s mother is too excited to help me with that.”
“I think she’d be more helpful than you expect.” Kylie tucked her legs under her. “Luna Louisa is a great Luna. She won’t let the pack’s new Luna struggle.”
“Even if I’m human?”
“Especially because you’re human. Truth is, all eyes, not just in this pack, will be on you. The first human Luna. She won’t let Gray Rock fail.”
“No pressure there.” I stood up to get us some drinks. “Maybe let’s change the subject to another potential failing for me. How painful will Monday’s training with Danny be?”
“Loads.” The amount of sympathy in her eyes was scary. “He makes the warriors cry.”
“Well, that’s not at all reassuring.” I handed her a soda and sat down again on the couch.
“Do you want reassuring or the truth?”
I thought about it for a minute. “Truth, I guess. Anything else?”
“Lisa will be a bitch to you.” Her answer was immediate. “She might be more subtle about it, so it’s less likely to trigger Tobias’s anger, but she will not just give up the idea of being Luna.”
“So I just need to survive asking Luna Louisa for help, training with Danny, and keeping Lisa in her place. Sounds like it’ll be a fun week.”
CHAPTER12
Tobias
Being away from Emma was driving me crazy. I watched the clock, wondering if it was too soon to return to the apartment. How long did women talk?
I wasn’t getting any work done. Maybe I should just go back. Was half an hour enough? Just because I was there didn’t mean Kylie had to leave. But at least I could hold Emma and calm my wolf.
I snorted. My wolf. It wasn’t just my wolf missing her. I had grown up seeing the mate bond around me, but I didn’t truly realize how all-encompassing it was. How would I survive the week with her at the summer program?
Maybe she would be ready for me to mark her soon, which should settle the bond. Despite external dramas, things were going well.
I left my office, intent on seeing Emma, but stopped when I saw Matthew, Patrick, and Danny outside my door. “Did we have a meeting I forgot about?”
Matthew leaned against the door frame, blocking my way. “No, but I heard you leaving your apartment and thought you could use some support away from Emma.”
“I was just heading back there.”
“How long have you been gone?” Patrick’s brow raised and arms crossed, blocking my second escape route.
“Longest half an hour of my life.”
Danny slung his arm around my neck, cutting off my last hope of escape. “I can’t wait to meet this human who has you tied up in knots.”
They dragged me back into my office and shoved me into my chair. Matthew patted me on the shoulder as he sat on my desk. “I remember the early days after I met Brenda. She made me wait an entire day before marking her. Felt like forever.”
Danny threw himself on the couch while Patrick poured the whiskey. He handed us all a glass. “To our Alpha, who finally found his Luna.”
We clinked glasses, and I took a sip of the whisky, feeling the burn as it slid down my throat. I looked down into my glass, swirling the amber liquid while I debated asking the question whose answer I feared. “What’s the talk around the pack?”
They exchanged glances. In the end, Matthew answered. “You claimed Emma in public, so rumors are flying. But people aren’t sure if it’s true.”
Patrick shrugged, leaning against the wall. “Most people are dismissing it. They don’t think it’s possible for a human to be Luna.”
Danny was blunt. “Does it matter? I’m assuming you’re accepting her, no matter what.”
“I just want to be prepared. Emma shouldn’t have to deal with it. It’s hard enough for her to accept the mate bond without all that.”
