I glanced at Emma, who sat across the table at a diner outside the pack borders. I thought she’d be more comfortable in the human world for our date. “I’m sorry this morning got off to such a rough start. The morning did not go as planned.”

“You had a plan?” She tilted her head and gave me a curious look.

I reached across the table and took her hand in mine, running my thumb across the skin, memorizing the feel of her. “I planned to wake up in bed together, cuddle, and have breakfast in bed. Then I planned a romantic walk to show you my favorite spots in the pack.”

“Sounds nice. Maybe tomorrow?”

“Are you asking me to sleep with you again?” I couldn’t help but grin at the implication.

She blushed, tossing a hash brown at me. “It’s your bed.”

I caught the hash brown in my mouth before correcting her. “It’s our bed. And I would be glad to wake up with you in it again tomorrow.”

We shared a smile. Hers tinged with embarrassment. “Anything specific you’d like to do today?”

“I was supposed to hang out with Kylie this afternoon. Can I still do that?”

“If that’s what you want. I’d prefer you hung out at our place, so you’re close, though.” Disappointment filled me, but I didn’t want to come across as too overbearing.

“Kylie’s been great since I got here, and I don’t want her to think I’ve forgotten about her since finding out you and I are mates.” Emma studied her almost empty plate. “And I’d like to talk to a friend about all this mate stuff.”

“Of course.” It made sense she needed help to process everything that had happened. “But wolves expect new mates to disappear.”

She shrugged, her eyes twinkling with humor. “That may be the case, but I’m human, and we don’t dump our friends for a guy. Even a Goddess-gifted one.”

I felt a mind link coming in. It was Greg.Alpha, Emma’s mother and I would like to invite you two over for dinner this evening if you’re available.

“Would you like to have dinner with Greg and your mom tonight? Greg just linked me to invite us.”

Emma nodded. “That would be nice.”

I sent Greg a response in the affirmative and turned back to Emma. “Would you like me to link Kylie and ask her to meet us back at the packhouse?”

“I’ll send her a text.” Emma pulled out her phone and shot off the message. “Do you have a cell phone? I can’t link you if I need to get a hold of you or want to send you random cat pictures or something.”

“Cat pictures? To a wolf?” I looked at her in mock horror, pulling out my phone. “I will give you my number if you promise no cat pictures.”

Her eyes danced as she bit her lip. “I make no promises, mister Alpha wolf.”

We exchanged numbers. “You won’t be able to link the rest of the pack, but we will be able to mind link each other after I mark you.”

I felt a minor victory when she didn’t protest the thought of me marking her. She was getting used to the idea of us being mates and accepting me.

CHAPTER11

Emma

The breakfast date with Tobias went well, despite the rocky start to the day. We just clicked, more than I ever had with anyone else. It was almost enough to remove my doubts about the mate bond.

If Tobias were human, I would want to date him. It was the forever part that tripped me up. I was only eighteen, and I thought I had lots of time to decide my future. Instead, I faced a future set in stone. Mates with Tobias and Luna to the pack.

We were back in his apartment now, cuddling on the couch, each lost in our own thoughts. I wondered what his were. He acted so certain that I belonged in his life, but his world was pushing back hard against us. It would have been easier for him if I were a wolf. It would also be so much easier for me if I were a wolf. I’m sure then my doubts would be non-existent.

The doorbell rang, and I sprang up, rushing to the door. Kylie stood there, a little hesitant when I invited her in. She bared her throat at Tobias. “Alpha.”

“Welcome, Kylie.” He stood and crossed the room to me, leaning down to brush his lips across my forehead. “I’ll head to my office so you two can visit.”

Kylie shifted back and forth as he left. I motioned for her to join me on the couch. “Thanks for coming. I know I was supposed to go to your place today, but Tobias wanted me to stay near.”
