“I can’t do that.”

“Trust me, I can take it.” The obvious amusement almost made me want to punch him again. “I’ll also be giving you a workout routine to build your strength up. There’s a gym in the packhouse’s basement you can use.”

He showed me the first combination, and we took turns throwing a jab, cross, hook combo with a hook to the ribs counter. He made a few corrections to my blocking, but overall, he seemed satisfied with my progress.

Danny led me over to the weight training room and showed me the exercises he wanted me to do. He gave me two routines and told me to alternate days. One focused on the upper body, the other lower.

“Take Sundays off. Walk and stretch, but rest for a day.”

“Thank you for taking the time out to train me. I know you have other priorities.” Roger was a good trainer, but Danny was on another level entirely.

“It’s important for you to be able to defend yourself. You are our future Luna.” He turned serious for a moment. “But don’t wander far alone, especially with the attack that happened. If anything happened to you, Tobias would go crazy.”

His words stayed with me long after he said them. Tobias told me that, as an alpha, his wolf’s instincts were stronger than most werewolves. Knowing how heartbroken Jenny was, and how worried everyone was that she wouldn’t survive, I wondered if it would be worse for an Alpha.

I wanted to dismiss the thought. Jenny was strong, especially considering how little time had passed. Everyone was just paranoid about the dangers.

CHAPTER19

Tobias

My phone rang just as I was about to leave my office to watch Emma’s first training session with Danny. I considered ignoring it but when I saw the number, I changed course.

“Sebastian. Any news?”

“We completed the autopsy results.” He got straight to the point. “Neil died from blood loss. The human from some type of venom.”

“Any idea what it was?”

“Not yet. The bite pattern on all victims is the same, so we’re dealing with one attacker.”

“Wolves don’t have venom, so it can’t be a rogue.” I jotted down notes. “Unless the bite didn’t introduce the venom.”

“The examiner is certain it did.”

“Was there any venom in Neil’s system?”

“None.” I heard the sound of pages flipping through the phone. “He ran the tests twice, to be sure. We checked for antibodies, thinking Neil’s body fought off the venom, but there was nothing.”

“I didn’t notice much blood at the scene.”

“Neither did I. But Neil lost more than half what his blood volume should have been.”

“What about the human female?”

“Minor blood loss. Not even close to a fatal amount.”

“It’s confusing how a well-trained warrior was taken down.” I tapped my pen against the desk. “Was there a sign of a struggle?”

“Whatever happened killed him fast. Defensive wounds were present but less than expected.”

“Any DNA?”

“Not enough for identification. The examiner has forwarded the samples to our main lab. We’re hoping they’ll be able to do more with them.”

“Thank you for updating me.” I leaned back in my chair. “Are you able to release Neil’s body to us now?”

“We want our main research lab to examine his body just in case we missed something.” He paused. “How is his mate doing?”
