“She said she won’t marry me.”
“You asked and she said no? I thought she liked you. That doesn’t sound right.”
My cheeks flush and my eyes skitter away. “Well, actually I just kind of told her that we were getting married.”
Both of them lean down and put their hands on their denim-clam knees, roaring with laughter.
“I’m surprised you’re still standing.”
My lips curl and I smile at them. “Actually if you hadn’t gotten there I might not be.”
Both of them sit down and eye me. “So you actually want to marry her?”
“I’ve been in love with her since she came home.”
Jameson huffs. “You dirty old man. I should kick your ass but I think my sister is doing it for me.”
Chuckling, I shake my head. “Yeah. Kinda.”
“You need to show her that you’re not going anywhere. That you’re serious. That you love her.”
“I told her that.”
“You need to show her.”
My brain is spinning. And then my head clears out and I know exactly what I’m doing.
Standing up, I grab my coat and head out the door. “Lock up. I’ve got somewhere to be.”
It takes me a couple of hours to do it but I’ve finally got everything together and I’m standing in front of her house.
Taking a deep breath, I bang on the door. “Open up! I know you’re in there!” I bark.
Shuffling steps head for the door and then she’s swinging it open, her eyes huge.
“What the hell?”
“Maggie Wilde! You’re under arrest.”
I pull out my handcuffs and she eyes me like they’re rattlesnakes. It takes all my control not to laugh at the look on her face.
“Are you going to come quietly or do I have to do this the hard way?”
She leans against the wall and her arms come up and cross over her chest. “Definitely the hard way. What are you doing?”
I drop to one knee and her eyes go even wider. “Nothing could be harder than losing you, Mags. If you want me to crawl over broken glass to win you, fine. I will. But if I have to…I’ll keep you handcuffed to me until you realize that I’m serious. I’m not going any damn place. I’m yours. I’ve been yours since you came home and you flashed that pretty smile and those amber eyes at me. I was a goner. Just…think about it. I want to be a father to that baby.” Her hands come down and rest on her little belly. “I want to be the husband you’ve dreamt of. The man that you never saw coming. I’m that man. I’m the one that your mama warned you about. But not to stay away from. I’m the man your mama told you would make the whole world stop, just to see your smile. I can live without anything else in this world but not you. So please…,put me out of my misery and say that you love me too. Say that you’ll marry me and we’ll raise this little one and any others were lucky enough to have together.”
Tears sparkle in her amber eyes. “I love you too, dammit! You were supposed to be one night not the one.”
I cock my head at her and move closer, tucking her under my chin and smirking when she breathes out slow and then I feel her sniff my shirt.
“Are you really mad about that?”
Her head shifts on my chest as she shakes it back and forth. “No. I really wish I was. Especially after what you said the first time. But I just can’t be.” Her head comes up and her pretty pink lips smirk at me. “You’re gonna drive me nuts aren’t you?”
“I’m gonna be a good daddy.”
Her eyes sparkle wickedly. “I like the sounds of that.”
