Sanjana took in a deep breath. “I already know that.”
Rishan’s expression flickered, shock flashing across his bruised face. “What?”
She met his gaze steadily, her voice clipped. “I already know he’s going to leave me after I give him an heir. Anything else you want to add? If not, I need to leave.”
With that, she moved past him.
“Sanjana, wait!” Rishan’s voice followed her, frantic, echoing down the corridor. He caught up, still trying to pull her back. “You don’t understand. He’s using you—”
She was annoyed by his persistence. Before she could snap at him, a loud commotion stirred at the far end of the hall, nurses and hospital staff talking excitedly to someone.
Sanjana frowned and as she stepped into the reception area, her heart jolted.
Ram.
Tall, unyielding, and every inch the Maharaja, even as he stood in the sterile hospital reception.
A senior doctor was greeting him. “Your Highness, this is an honor. Congratulations on your marriage. The entire hospital is proud to have our own doctor as the Queen of Devara.”
“Thank you,” Ram said smoothly.
Another senior doctor stepped forward. “We had no idea you and Dr. Shetty were involved. But now it makes perfect sense. She’s one of the finest here, and now, she’s royalty.”
Ram didn’t reply. His gaze locked on her first, and then moved to Rishan standing next to her.
Sanjana’s heart raced. She didn’t know how Ram would react.
She almost expected to see the next day’s headlines stating that the Devara Maharaja was involved in a brawl at a hospital.
“I’m here to pick up my wife from work,” Ram’s voice cut in smoothly.
Sanjana was shocked.
Ram’s words seemed to ripple through the reception area.
Several nurses let out dreamy sighs. “So romantic,” one whispered. Another nudged her friend with a broad smile, “Like something out of a movie.” “Dr. Shetty is so lucky.”
Sanjana’s cheeks heated listening to their words. She wanted to protest and insist that this wasn’t the fairytale they imagined, but she remained quiet as the murmurs continued. Everyone saw her as the Maharani, being swept away by her powerful husband.
Ram walked towards her. Next to her, Rishan stiffened, and his face turned pale with anger and fear. But Ram didn’t acknowledge his cousin. He reached for her elbow, his grip steady and unyielding. Without waiting for her response, he led her outside.
The staff stepped back respectfully, some still whispering as they passed. Sanjana smiled, though her heart pounded with every step, the warmth of his hand searing against hers.
Outside, the black SUV waited, flanked by security. Ram opened the door himself, his movements precise and deliberate. She slid inside, pulse thudding hard, and a moment later, he joined her.
Only when the SUV doors shut and the tinted windows cut them off from the world outside did Sanjana turn to him.
“What was that, Ram?” she demanded. “Do you enjoy turning my workplace into a royal spectacle?”
He looked at her. “I came to pick my wife from work,” he said evenly. “That’s hardly a spectacle.”
Her fingers curled into fists in her lap. “I am not a fool. I know very well that your security told you Rishan came to see me at the hospital.”
He didn’t deny it. He didn’t confirm it either. But the weight of his dark silence said more than words ever could.
CHAPTER 40
Sanjana stormed into the master suite, her sandals clicking hard against the polished marble. She didn’t even wait for the door to shut before she spun on her heel, eyes blazing.
