His response was instant.
Fine. Come over. I’ll send a car
I scoffed and got some of my backbone back.
Sorry. I’m in for the night. Thank you for the invite but I have to say no
I stared at my phone, waiting for a reply but none came. It was ridiculous but I felt a bit disappointed when the messages stopped. I was losing my mind. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing or what I wanted. I didn’t even know what was up for offer.
I forced myself off the bed and into a lukewarm shower. Afterwards I pulled on my pajamas, a tank top and short set, also from my past life, and crawled into bed with the check. I tracedmy name printed on it’s surface and felt not the first, or second, jolt of anxiety over the money. It was stupid. I participated in the auction for the money. I needed the money. Yet it gave me chills to see such a large amount. Money corrupted. It ate through people and families and left nothing behind but bones and shadows of what once was.
It was one of the reasons I wanted nothing to do with my dad. One of many. I let out a heavy sigh and jumped when the wall rattled next to my head.
“Keep it down over there!” Aaron was back at it.
“I sighed, you dick! It’s not my fault you have the hearing of a bat!”
“A bat? What the hell’s that supposed to mean?”
I grunted. “Bats have great hearing. Duh. Pick up a book, would ya?”
“I read! I read a lot. It’s not like I can watch TV with you next door, making all that racket!”
I sat up. “Aaron, I officially have enough money to hire a hitman. Leave me alone.”
“Yeah? Well, just because you came into some money doesn’t mean you can sigh all loud and shit.”
“I swear to god, Aaron, you are the—” I screamed when my apartment door flew open and Jace stormed into my apartment, looking every bit like a raging bull.
“Where is he? Where’s the asshole we could hear screaming at you?” He looked around wildly while Luc and Maddox did the same. “Who is he? Did he hurt you?”
My heart was racing from the shock of having my door kicked in and from the shock of havingthemin my crappy little apartment. I tried to form words but I couldn’t get them out.
From next door Aaron shouted again.
“He’s next door and he’s her neighbor, douche! I’m trying to read about bats over here! Keep it down!”
All three men stood large and dominant next to my bed, blocking me in. Jace glared at the wall.
“You keep it down, asshole. Don’t scream at women!”
“Harley? She’s not a woman. She’s Harley. Who are you, anyway?” Aaron surely did love to taunt someone. “Where’d you find this guy, Harley? Beef-For-Brains-R-US?”
“Could you just go away for one single minute, Aaron? And I am very much a woman, you cretin.”
“Yeah, yeah, I’ve seen the boobs. And if you think I’m getting out of my bed to step away for you and your boyfriend to do whatever you mammals do, you’re nuts. I’ll just close my eyes and pretend I’m on a jungle safari.”
“Who the fuck is this asshole?” Luc looked like he was ready to punch a hole through the wall to strangle Aaron.
I groaned and hit the wall with my fist.
“He’s just a neighbor. We have a thing.”
“Just a neighbor? I’ll have you know we have a very serious ongoing relationship of hating each other.”
“Has he seen your boobs?” Maddox watched me with a cocky smile and a raised eyebrow but there was something dark in his gaze.
“No!”
