“Well…” I rack my brain as I try to think about what I can actually tell him that doesn’t give away that I’m from another world and not really a princess. What would princesses do for fun?
Go for long walks through the garden?
Boring.
Knitting?
No, thank you.
Listen to lords talk about apples?
I almost snort in amusement at that one.
I think about my love of fashion and decide that’s something I can share with them.
“I enjoy sewing.”
Rowan arches his brows, his eyes dipping to my body. “Did you makethat dress? It’s lovely.”
“No. Actually, on the journey here, I’ve been altering some of my dresses to make them more to my liking. This one, I haven’t touched.”
“How do you alter them?” Jeremiah asks.
I figure there’s no real harm in telling them. If I’m going to have any chance at being with them one day, they’ll need to get used to me wearing shorter dresses at some point.
“I like to change the hemline. I find this length gets in the way of riding and gets dirty too easily. I prefer them above my knees.”
Jeremiah, whose hand has been on my lower thigh this whole time, slowly releases his grip and runs a finger across my dress, right above my knee. “Here?”
I nod, swallowing the lump in my throat as my mind races. Did I like that? Am I actually vibing with these guys? The thought makes me anxious.
“You wear dresses like that just around your home?” Rowan asks.
“I’d like to dress like that all the time, if I’m being honest.” He gives me a smile that feels a little flat as Edwin asks, “Do you like to read?”
“I love to read,” I answer, thankful for the change in subject.
“We have a lot of books here,” Rowan says, gesturing to the wall of shelves behind him. “What kind do you enjoy? History? Politics?”
“Uh…” My eyes dart between theirs as I admit, “Romance, actually.”
Their expressions shift a bit, my answer seeming to relax them. Edwin leans back on the couch, his arm stretching out behind me. I’m still sitting upright, so he isn’t touching me, but if I sat back, it would be around my shoulders.
“Is that so?” Rowan asks, leaning forward to rest his elbows on his knees as he stares at me. “What is it you like about them?”
I lick my lips, unsure how to answer, because I’m not even sure myself. “I don’t know,” I admit.
He cocks his head. “Is it the courting? Do you enjoy hearing how men woo their women?”
“Or is it the tease, the sexual chemistry that builds between the characters?” Edwin adds.
“I think you like reading about the things the men do to their women,” Jeremiah states boldly, making goosebumps rise on my skin from his touch on my knee.
Am I nervous? Intrigued? I’m not sure what to call this feeling. My eyes dart around the room, but Arrow and Ranger are behind me, so there’s no one to tell me if I shouldn’t be talking about this. It definitely wasn’t on the list of approved topics we went over weeks ago.
“I like all of it,” I tell them, before taking a shaky sip of my drink.
Rowan smirks before glancing at his brothers. “Hmm. Maybe one day you’ll be willing to elaborate on that.”
