“Can you not tell Banks about all this shit today? Please?”
“Why?” I chuckled curiously, but when he smirked while shrugging, I peeped game. “Aye, I share everything I got with you, but that’s my woman, nigga.” I laughed, and he followed suit. “Find yo’ own. You my kin, so it shouldn’t be too hard for yo’ ass.”
“Oh, it ain’t. Trust me, my nigga.” He scoffed. “It’s just the girls at school aren’t as pretty and smart as Banks. It’s just something about her that I can’t explain, but she got it, and they don’t.” He picked at the grass. “She knows a lot of stuff, and she low-key scares the shit out of me, but I kind of like that.”
We chortled.
“What she has that they don’t is called an aura, Wyatt. And she got it ’cause she’s a woman and they’re girls. Once they become women, some of them will have it as well. I can’t say any woman will amount to Banks St. Thomas, but I’m biased.”
“I hope they get this aura.” He sighed, shaking his head as if this were a huge dilemma. Shit, I preferred this be his issue versus some street shit. “Otherwise, if you fumble Banks, I can just marry her.”
“I won’t. Ever. Now get yo’ ass up and come on.” I shook my head at his ass plotting on my girl.
“Can’t wait until you hear this shit,” one of my workers Mitch said to me as I entered the room with Free behind me.
I took a seat at the card table where he was, Free sitting adjacent to me.
“Play it,” I told him.
Mitch hit the button on his phone so that the voice memo would play. I immediately recognized Gaia’s voice, and judging by her tone, the bitch was pissed the fuck off.
“Wait, who is this?” Mitch quizzed, and I could tell he was blowing out smoke.
“His name is Clayton Booth. He approached me, and we made a deal that if I give him intel on something big within Low’s operation, I will get immunity and a big ass payout to start my life over.” She inhaled on a blunt. “At least that’s what he thinks, but I plan to get my own operation going out of state, if you’re interested. You ain’t moving up no time soon with Low. If he passes off anything, it’ll be to Free,” she talked shit.
My jaw clenched as I listened to her talking on shit she knew nothing about. By the time I retired in the next few years, so would Free. He’d already stated he wasn’t down to do this shit without me or Asif by his side, so once I was done, so was he.
“Stupid ass bitch,” Free grumbled.
“Why out of state?” Mitch prodded.
“’Cause I wouldn’t last here once I snitch on Low. Free would try to smoke me, and then so would Asif. I ain’t fucking stupid. So what do you say?”
“I gotta see you work this shit out first,” Mitch replied, and Gaia sucked her teeth before changing the conversation, so the recording stopped.
“And how the fuck you just come up on this shit?” I queried once Mitch put his phone up.
“I—I ain’t think it was an issue if I smashed her, boss.” His eyes darted to Free, then landed back onto me.
“That ain’t the issue,” I said.
“Well, yeah, I been fucking on her as of very recently. Since the night she fought Banks. This was one of our normal smoke and fuck sessions, and soon as she said she had some shit to run by me, I started recording the conversation,” he explained. I sat back, eyeing him and trying to get a read on this nigga. “Swear on my kids, boss. This was last night, and I hit you right up.”
“Send me that shit, delete it, and dip.” I bobbed my head toward the exit.
Mitch nodded his head profusely as his ashy, calloused fingers moved across his phone screen just before my burner buzzed. He then showed me that he was deleting it from his phone and from the barren conversation thread to my burner.
“We good, boss?” He rose.
“Yeah.”
I didn’t know if Mitch was on bullshit or not, hence why I wanted him gone before I discussed anything with Free. Additionally, I wasn’t about to let him know I was against him if he did turn out to be a snake. I had to keep all fucking enemies close.
Free got up to make sure Mitch had left, then returned to the room.
“What you wanna do?” he inquired.
“Put her onto the pickup at the Nevada warehouse,” I said. “I’m gon’ make sure Detective Booth’s little informant gets caught up.”
