Chapter One
SORAYA ‘YAYA’ CRAWFORD
“Somebody call 9-1-1. Somebody call fuckin 9-1-1,” I was screaming to the top of my lungs, down on my knees, with both my hands on the sides of Sevyn’s face, cradling it. If I had to guess, about a minute had gone by, and I was continuing to shake him, while screaming his name over, and over, but none of those things were helping.
I took my eyes off him for a second, just to see who was standing behind me, and quite a few people from the party had come outside, and a couple of them had phones glued to their ears, so I knew that they were placing the call, trying to get an ambulance out here, so that they could tend to Sevyn. I didn’t want our boys to come out here and see their dad like this because it would only make the situation worse. They were going to freak out, which would cause me to freak out even more, and that’s what I was trying to avoid from happening right now.
“Sevyn, baby, you got to wake up. Can you hear me? Sevyn, don’t do this to me. Baby, please wake up,” I don’t think I’ve ever begged for something in this manner outside of the night that I had to hold Sarai’s dead body in my arms, and I was shaking her, begging, and pleading for her to wake up.
That’s exactly what this moment felt like. This moment was triggering as hell for me. I’ve been put through losing someone that I truly loved already, and I knew that I wasn’t strong enough to go through it a second time, so the need that I had for Sevyn to wake up was very fuckin urgent.
It took a few more moments of me shaking him, and pleading, and right when the wailing of the ambulance sirens could be heard, that’s when Sevyn’s eyes slowly fluttered open, and when they did, he looked around frantically, trying to assess what was going on. He looked confused out of his mind, and seeing me kneeling in front of him, face leaking in tears, I’m sure that I didn’t make the situation any better.
“Sevyn, what the fuck happened?” I screamed, and right after I asked the question, I could hear footsteps heading in our direction, as if they were running towards us, and it was our boys standing there, looking down at their father on the ground, with me still cradling his head in my hands.
This moment for them was probably traumatizing because they looked at their father as a superhero, and they’d never seen him down before. Law was the kind of man that didn’t even get sick. I’ve known him since I was six years old, and I can’t remember a time when he’s ever had a cold. He was always fully fueled, ready to go on, and tackle the day, so for the boys to see their father waking up from passing out, I saw the look in their eyes, as if they were scared straight.
“Ma, what’s wrong with dad? What happened?” Legend was the first one to ask.
“I’m not sure. I found him passed out on the floor. He’s up now. He’s going to be okay,” I responded, saying that in a way to calm myself down, and not the kids.
I didn’t know what was going on. I didn’t know what caused him to pass out. I wasn’t sure if that shit that he learned about Dominic, and I had caused this. I had so many questions rightnow, but before I was even given a chance to ask them, the ambulance came shooting their way into the parking lot, and the EMT workers quickly jumped out of the truck, and they rushed over to where I was with Sevyn.
I was quickly moved out of the way, and they immediately started working on him, checking his vitals, trying to see what was going on. It broke my heart when they started asking him basic questions, like his name, today’s date, where he was, and even trying to get him to explain what happened, but he was so confused and disoriented that he couldn’t answer any of the questions.
“Why is he doing that? What’s wrong with him?” I screamed, crying, and shaking terribly, feeling like I was getting ready to lose my mind. I really had been trying to calm down for the sake of my children, but when Sevyn couldn’t say what his name was, that shit broke me, and scared the shit out of me, too.
“Ma’am, you have to relax. This is common right now. Because he lost consciousness, his body, along with his brain must play catch up, so that’s why he’s confused. It should just take about a few minutes more,” one of the workers came over, and said to me.
I didn’t want to be the reason why they couldn’t properly work on him, so I took a step back, and when I did, I crashed right into my sister, who I didn’t even know had made it out here yet. It’s almost like she knew that I needed her in this moment because she reached her arms out, wrapped them around me, and I fought so hard to keep my cry to myself because my boys were just a few feet away, and this isn’t the kind of energy that I was trying to show them.
“Law is going to be okay. Soraya, relax, and breathe,” my sister coached me, as I had my head buried into the crook of her neck, trying to get myself together. I could feel one of her hands on my back, slowly rubbing it in a circular motion.
Milan had come over too, and she was holding a small, handheld fan in her hand, letting the cool air blow on me, so that I didn’t pass out next.
“What’s your name, man?” another one of the EMT workers asked Law after about five minutes had passed.
“Man, where my wife at? Somebody go get my fuckin wife,” I heard his voice after fifteen minutes of what felt like the hardest fifteen minutes of my life.
Slow tears had been trickling down my face, as I was hugged up with my sister, but the second I heard the sound of his voice, I laughed through my tears, walked over to him, and I kneeled in front of him.
“You scared the shit out of me, Sevyn!” was all that I could think of saying.
“What’s all this? What’s going on?” his ass had the nerve to be annoyed that all these people were surrounding him, and that there were workers out here, trying to help him.
“You passed out. We had to call 9-1-1,” I let him know, and then I turned my head to the EMT’s because I had questions.
“What now?” I asked them.
“His vitals are fine. Everything is fine. We can recommend him going to the hospital, just to get checked, and make sure that everything else with him is okay,” the worker offered me.
“I feel fine. I don’t have to go to the hospital,” was Sevyn’s response.
“I’m not turning down you going to the hospital, Sevyn, so you’re just going to have to be mad at me. Can you transport him there? Don’t listen to anything that he’s saying because I still don’t believe that he’s in his right mind. I won’t sleep well tonight unless I know that he’s fine,” I let the EMT know, and they all agreed that they would transport him.
Sevyn talked shit the entire way, as they had to lift him up, and put him on the gurney, so that they could wheel him over to the truck.
“Shai, take the boys. I’ll call ya’ll with an update. Creed, and Legend, your dad is going to be fine. I just want to follow up and make sure. That’s all,” I assured them, walking over to both my boys, and I quickly pulled them to me, so that I could kiss them on their foreheads.
