“Well, not men, but you know, how do you tell your husband you want to ...have sex?”It sounded stupid to my own ears.Victor was my husband.I should just come out and blurt it.

“You want to know how to get Victor into bed?”she asked.

My face was now burning.“Yes.”There was no point in denying it.

“You’re both married.Doesn’t that shit come easy?”she asked.

“We didn’t exactly have the best start.”I pressed my lips together.“He didn’t want to be married, and he certainly didn’t want to be married to me.”

“Only now, knowing you’re Volkov’s sister has a pretty nice flair to it.”

I stared at her, and I wasn’t sure if she was being sarcastic.

“We already talked about it—”

“Freya, relax, I’m joking. At the end of the day, Ivan wanted you to be married to Victor. He believed you two to be a good match, so I believe in him.”Freya gave a shrug.

We stopped talking as I was once again attacking The Butcher, only this time I was still standing, even after ten seconds. She had to be going easy on me, but I refused to hit her.She was my best friend.

That didn’t help me, as a second later, I was back on the floor again, looking up at her.

“Hello,” I said, holding up my hand and giving her a wave.

“What is that?”she asked.

“I’m saying hello from all the way down here.”

The Butcher sighed, and then she surprised me by moving to lay beside me, so we were both staring up at the sky.

“Is Ivan a good person?”I asked, after several minutes had passed.

“Yes and no.”

“That’s not really an answer.”

“Ivan is a complicated guy,” she said. He’s not a good guy.He has a lot of enemies, but that is to be expected.Someone in his position is going to have a lot of enemies. When it comes to the women he chooses for his men, he has a soft spot.He takes care of those no one seems to want.”

This made me turn to look at her.“What?”

“All the women that are now wives to the Brigadiers share something in common. They were unwanted or even abused by their families.Ivan took them away from all of that.He made a home for them, a life. That is what makes him a good guy.”

“Is that why ...you ...want to help him?”

The Butcher was silent for many seconds, maybe even minutes, and I figured we were done talking. She tended to just go silent on me from time to time.

“I’ve dealt with a lot of men in my time—monsters, the true scum that walks the earth—and in all that time, I have only known a handful of men that have my respect.Ivan Volkov is one of them.”

“You guys have a history?”I asked.I’m pretty sure I was asking too many questions.

“Ivan and I had run-ins a couple of times before he opened up the possibility of becoming a Brigadier. We tend to have a give-and-take relationship. It is how it has always been, and it is how it will always be.”

She stopped talking.

“One of the jobs I was given was to exterminate the entire Volkov Bratva. This was before Ivan took over.I believe it was a task given to me on purpose, expecting me to fail.As I went to do the job, I encountered Ivan.I’m younger than him, but when you’ve been training your whole life, age means nothing. He knew what I was supposed to do, and he told me what he planned to do.At first, I was not going to listen to him.The Volkov Bratva were a pest, but Ivan’s vision was flawless. So, I gave him a short time to accomplish it, and accomplish it he did. What Ivan doesn’t know, was that people wanted the Volkov completely annihilated.I stuck around to see him working, knowing he was one of these good bad guys, so I took care of every single person they sent to kill him.I made sure he lived to see his vision.”

I was shocked she had told me so much.

“Does Ivan know?”
