“I believe so, but they’ve been separated, as I said.” Melusina broke a tiny piece of her scone and examined it before placing it in her mouth.
Edna gave a single nod of her head. “Then they will be together again. I’ll see to it.”
“We expect naething less from ye, Edna.”
“Be on yer way then. Go home, get Angus and meet us back here this afternoon. We’ll see that ye get where ye need to be,” Daire said.
Edna left her uneaten scone and tea behind as she grabbed her wrap and hurried out the door. This was what she had been waiting for. It was the reason she’d come to Edinburgh. She was going to work her magic in a time and place she was unfamiliar with, but how hard could that be? Edna’s work had almost always paired people from the past with present day matches. This would be a new challenge for her and one she was eager to take on.
“Angus! Angus!” Edna shouted as she rushed into their apartment.
"I’m right here, Edna. Nae need to yell.” Angus looked up from his newspaper. Edna thought he should get a tablet, but he told her he liked the feel of a real paper in his hands.
“We’re going on an adventure,” she breathlessly explained.
“We are? Where to?” Angus stood and dropped the paper in a heap on his chair.
“France, in the year 1614. I doona ken how long we’ll be gone for, so can ye be sure to close everything up while I gather a few items I’ll need?” She looked around the room, peeking underneath and behind furniture. “William! Where are ye?”
William was the cat she’d brought with them from Glendaloch. He had helped her when she was kidnapped by another witch and in return she had given him a new home. He was her familiar and had powers of his own, one of which was hiding in plain sight whenever Edna needed him.
“There ye are.” Edna said as William appeared right in front of her.
“William, Angus and I are going on an adventure. Ye will stay here. Mrs. Clyman will take care of ye.”
He didn’t think he needed to be taken care of and let out a yowl of protest in response.
“Doona be difficult. She’s going to feed ye and clean up after ye. Doona give her a hard time, do ye hear me?” Edna bent down to look him in the eye.
If he did, he certainly didn’t let her know as he leisurely licked his paw and then used it to clean behind his ear.
Edna glanced at Angus who had covered his mouth to stifle his laughter.
“Verra funny,” Edna said. “Let’s get going.”
“Will I need to bring anything?” Angus asked.
“Yer sword will do,” Edna said as she bustled about the living room. “Anything else ye need, we’ll get when we arrive.” She stopped in her tracks and turned to Angus, her brow furrowed with worry.
“What is it?” Angus asked.
“Do ye mind joining me? I dinna think to ask.”
“Do I mind? What kind of question is that? By yer side is where I wish to be.”
“Ye’re sure?” Edna had assumed he would be, but double and triple checking wasn’t out of the question for her.
“Verra,” Angus assured her.
“All right then.”
“Besides if I did no’ go with ye, who’d protect ye when ye got yerself into trouble?”
“Angus, I’m perfectly capable of taking care of meself, I am a witch ye ken.” Why was it that everyone thought she needed to be protected? She hadn’t made it this far in life without avoiding a sticky situation or two. Edna was quite sure she could overcome almost anything if need be.
“I’m verra aware.” His face beamed with a mischievous grin.
“Oh, ye,” Edna laughed, as he snaked an arm around her waist and reeled her into his chest.
