Emilie and Robert were standing with Maggie and Dylan. Emilie looked like a deer in the headlights as her eyes darted back and forth between Maggie and Robert. “Will she be…?”

“She’ll be fine, dear. Doona worry. Ye and Robert stay here.”

“There are no guests here now and none expected, so you don’t have to worry about any of that. The kitchen is stocked with food in case we aren’t back in the morning.” Dylan was rattling off anything he could think of.

“Ye’re doing surprisingly well,” Angus said to Dylan.

“I’ve been planning this out in my head for months now. I’m going to get the car. Are you okay, Maggie?”

“I’m fine,” she said, not sounding fine at all.

Dylan hurried out back to get the car. Edna held Maggie’s hand. “Remember to breathe. All will be well and before ye ken it there will be two wee ones for us all to love.”

“The car’s here,” Angus said, holding the inn door open for Maggie and Edna. “We’ll be back.”

“Good luck to ye all,” Robert said as they hurried to the car.

The hospital wasn’t far, but Dylan made it in record time and for that, Edna was grateful. “Yer an excellent driver, Dylan.”

“Thanks. Anything to take my mind off the pain Maggie is in.”

“I’m okay right now.”

Dylan ran inside the hospital and before long a nurse with a wheelchair met them and wheeled her inside.

“Dr. Ferguson,” Edna said, as he rushed into view. “’Tis good to see ye.”

“Good to see ye back in town. We’ll chat more later. For now, I’ve got some babies to deliver. Come along, Dylan.”

Edna grabbed onto Angus’ hand as she watched Maggie being wheeled away. “I guess there’s naething for us to do but wait.”

“Come sit,” Angus said, leading her to a small room equipped with comfy chairs and a television. “We might be here a while.”

“I’m so nervous,” Edna said. “I hope it all goes well.”

“Dr. Ferguson will see to it,” Angus assured her.

Edna sat in a comfy recliner facing the door and Angus sat right next to her and held her hand.

“We may as well relax. They’ll come find us when there’s news,” Angus said.

He reclined his chair and closed his eyes. Edna glanced over at him and wished she could be as relaxed as he was right now. She repeated a spell over and over in her head. It was one she used whenever she needed to be calmed, and before long, it worked. Then she, too, reclined her chair and was able to close her eyes and fall asleep.

“Edna,”Dr. Ferguson’s voice was soft and seemed very far away. “The babies have arrived.”

Edna’s eyes shot open and she sat straight up. “What? The babies?”

“Aye. Maggie is doing well and so are the twins. She’s had a boy and a girl.”

“Oh, my! Angus wake up! The babies are here.”

Angus opened his eyes and stretched his arms overhead.

“They’ve had a boy and a girl.” It was a surprise to both Edna and Angus. Maggie wanted to keep it a secret and had done a very good job of it.

“Oh that’s wonderful! Can we see them?”
