“How soon did ye want it?” he asked.
“Would now be too soon?” she asked.
“What’s the rush?”
“Nae rush at all. It’s just that this couple has been waiting for some time to wed and they’ve traveled a good distance to get here.”
“Is this one of yer time traveling couples, Edna?” the pastor asked.
He’d been skeptical the first time he’d met one of Edna’s people, but had come to realize that it was all true. People were traveling back and forth through time right here in Glendaloch and who was he to question it.
“They are a sweet couple. I’ll let them give ye all the details, but they just want to be married as soon as possible.”
“Give me about an hour. It’s just a small group, aye?”
“Just us,” Edna said.
“All right. I’ll see ye soon then.”
Edna hung up and went to find Maggie. She found them all out back in the garden.
“This is beautiful,” Emilie said when she saw Edna.
“I’m glad ye like it. It’s no’ the gardens at Tuileries, but I think it’s perfect.”
“Dylan showed us their cottage and was going to take us upstairs to our room,” Robert said.
That thought made Edna pause, the guest rooms are lovely but they aren’t really set up for someone to live in long term. So she quickly made a decision. “Maggie, I think they should take our rooms on the first floor.”
“Are you sure? I thought you might want to use them,” Dylan said.
“We’re just here visiting. Emilie and Robert will be living here. They’ll need the extra space to be comfortable.” Edna was having some mixed feelings about giving up their rooms, but she and Angus had already decided their life would be in Edinburg for the foreseeable future. It was only right to make Emilie and Robert as comfortable as possible. There would always be a room available for Edna and Angus when they visited.
“Perfect. We’ll have to get it ready for them,” he said.
“I’ll help. But before we do that, Pastor Robins said we can go down to the chapel and he’ll marry ye right away.” Edna checked the time. “We’ll be a little early, but he willnae mind.”
Emilie clapped her hands in excitement as Robert swept her off the ground and spun her around.
Edna and Maggie couldn’t stop smiling as they watched the happy couple.
“This is why we do what we do,” Edna said.
“I hope ye doona mind if I doona go with ye. I’m feeling a little tired and I think I’d like to lie down for a while.”
“That’s fine, dear. Ye rest. Angus and I will escort them and be their witnesses, but first I want to pick some flowers for Emilie’s bouquet.”
She retrieved her old pruning shears from the potting table and went to work. Maggie followed along beside her, pointing out the flowers she thought were the prettiest. Roses, daisies, lavender and baby’s breath made a colorful and fragrant nosegay.
“I’ll get some ribbon to tie it,” Maggie said as she slowly made her way back to the cottage.
Edna pruned off all the thorns and arranged them in her hand. Maggie returned with a wide pink ribbon which she wrapped around the flowers and then tied into a bow.
The women held them out at arm’s length to look over their work.
“Perfect,” Maggie said.
Edna motioned for Robert and Emilie to join her. “Pastor Robins is waiting for us, so we should go.”
