Aurora leaned her head back and turned so her right cheek was pressed against the headrest, fully facing me. “Thank you.”

“Did you still want to go to that party on Greek Row?” I prodded. Translation: are you planning on going to see the angelfucker?

“No. I’m exhausted, plus I’m driving and not interested in being the only sober one at the party.”

“Fair enough," I said.

"If you want to go, though, I can drop you off.” She paused. “Meg normally hits up most of the parties after her shift at the cafe.”

Aurora studied my every move. I knew I was standing at the precipice of disaster with either decision I made.

I should say yes to her dropping me off at the party.

I should ask Aurora for Meg’s number.

I should be thrilled that a beautiful woman seemed interested in me.

I should put Aurora’s protection above my desires.

I should realize it would never work between us: me, a fallen angel forced to walk this earth forever, and her, a mortal that will grow older with each passing year.

I should stay far away from her and let her live a normal life.

I should focus on my job.

I should heed Michael’s warnings and not incur his wrath.

I should be focused on my mission and my vow to Jos.

There are so many things that Ishoulddo.

But instead, I do what I have wanted to do again since that moment under the stars at Vic and Darlene's. I closed the gap between us and cradled her head in my hands.

Slowly, tentatively, I brushed my lips against hers. I kissed each corner of her mouth, her cupid’s bow, and gave her a gentle peck. I pressed my forehead against hers and breathed in her scent of lavender and honey. Content to stay in her car, where the real world and its problems ceased to exist.

Someone came out front to push the gate across to close Pine Creek, and the gears squeaking pulled me back to where we were and what I was doing.

“That shouldn’t have happened,” I said as I pulled myself away.

Aurora looped her arms around my neck. “I think that is exactly what needed to happen.”

She pushed me against the back of my seat and reached behind me. All I heard was a faint click of a button before I was lying flat on my back.

“What the he?—“

“Sorry about that. I would have given you some warning, but I knew you would try and talk me out of it.”

“Talk you out of what? Trying to dislocate my skull from my spinal cord?”

“This.” She used my shoulders as leverage as she swung her leg over so she was half straddling me. She leaned her elbow on the panel where the button was to roll down the window for leverage and brought her other leg over. Now I was pressed in this small space with Aurora on top of me.

I tilted my head around, trying to figure out a way to get out of this.

Then Aurora’s chest was heaving against mine as she propped my seat up back to a forty-five-degree angle, and dammit, it brought my attention back to those gorgeous globes in her fucking sheer shirt.

“So does that mean we aren’t friends?” She pouted out her bottom lip.

This evil, evil woman knew precisely what she was doing to me.
