Seriously, what’s in that torte?

“Thatisgood,” Jayden says, voice huskier than it was a moment ago.

“I know! Bernard needs to give whoever made this a pay raise.” I take another bite and offer some more to Jayden.

Like last time, he doesn’t refuse it.

A few bites later, the dessert is all gone, and I’m in the mood for sex.

Someone shoot me now.

But since room service didn’t include someone to help me with that dilemma, I scan the room to find something else to do.

Something to distract me.

Jayden’s phone rings and he answered it. “Hey, Connor.…Okay.…I’m putting you on speaker so that Isabelle can hear what you have to tell us.” He turns up the volume and holds the phone between us.

“I ran the names you gave me through several databases,” he says after Jayden gives him the okay to talk. “First, the potential victims are all politicians—including one senator and his wife—or individuals with political aspirations. They weren’t the only ones who met those criteria on the guest list. So if they were targeted for that reason, there’s a good chance the others were also targeted. They just didn’t realize it.”

“So it could be politically motivated,” Jayden says. “But if that’s the case, we don’t know why. Nor do we have any evidence of that to pass to the authorities.”

“There’s more,” Connor says through the speaker. “A former guest, who stayed there at the same as the first victim, has known links to the KGB.”

“How do you know that?” I ask.

“I have my sources.”

I can practically hear the theme music fromThe Twilight Zoneplaying in the background to his words.

“The FBI doesn’t have an issue with the person being in the US?”

“They’re monitoring his actions. So far, he hasn’t been caught doing anything to raise suspicion.”

“Does he have any connections to the staff working here?” Jayden asks.

“None that I can find. That doesn’t mean there aren’t any. It means it’s not showing up on any resources available to me.”

“What about the other guests?” I ask. “Any links between the individual and everyone else who was here during the same period as the suspicious activities?”

“Again, there’s nothing I’ve been able to ascertain. But I wouldn’t exclude that possibility.”

“When did the last politician stay here?” Jayden asks.

“That would be last month. He wasn’t on the list of guests who came forward with concerns of suspicious activity. But that doesn’t mean whoever’s involved didn’t target his room.”

“What about the person who believes his memory stick was stolen while he was a guest here?”

“Tyler Mathews is the one individual without any known interest in becoming a politician…but the legal firm he’s a partner at represents a senator.”

“Has the senator stayed at the resort?” I ask.

“He’s not on the list that Bernard gave you. But it’s feasible he stayed there before the suspicious activity.”

Connor gives us the senator’s name, and I tell him I’ll get back to him after I talk to Bernard.

“There’s something else you should know,” Connor says. “Another guest checked in last night with her husband. She’s running for a seat in the House of Representatives.”

“So the person responsible for the break-ins could also be here.”
