“What are you doing?”
“Changing. I figured your family would prefer a more casual meeting, not me in the suit I wore to work this morning and on the airplane.”
“You’re not meeting my family.”
“Oh, I am. Meeting my in-laws is top priority.”
I turned back to the luggage to bend and grab a T-shirt and a pair of navy shorts. As I stood up again, I felt Aurora touch my arm. I held back my flinch.
“Talon, you’re taking this whole thing too seriously.”
“Itisserious. I’m assuming you got your new social security card and the copy of our marriage certificate. Ourwedding may have been for an arrangement that suits both of us, but make no mistake; you’re my wife in every shape and form.”
“But—”
“And that includes meeting my in-laws.”
Aurora looked defeated. “Will you at least be… nice? I don’t want you growling at everyone.”
“I don’t growl at everyone.”
Aurora’s brows arched, and she tilted her head to the side.
“Well, I’m nice toyou.”
“That’s true, I guess. Your employees are terrified of you though.”
“And that’s a bad thing?”
Tired of arguing, Aurora huffed as she left the bedroom, but I didn’t miss her quick glance over her shoulder as I slipped my dress shirt down my arms.
I wished I had a chance to take a quick shower, but I spritzed a bit of cologne over my T-shirt and shorts, knowing it was the best I could do. I didn’t have a lot of time, but I snooped a little by examining the pictures propped up in frames on her dresser. Her family looked happy. She had numerous images of all of them.
Grabbing a pair of casual sneakers, I slid them on my feet, then dipped inside the bathroom to untie my hair that had been twisted at the base of my neck since this morning. The elastic slipped free, and it was a relief to have the strands loose around my shoulders. With a quick splash of water in my hands, I ran my fingers through it.
“Talon!” Aurora shouted from somewhere in the house, and I watched my face transform in the mirror. It was a side of me I’d never seen before. I was… happy.
I left the bathroom and met Aurora just inside the front door of her house, seeing her breath catch when she caught a glimpse of me.
“We’re taking your car,” Aurora said breathlessly as she bent to pet Draco.
I smiled inside. “Yes, dear.”
Chapter Twelve – Aurora
How did the man have the most beautiful hair I’d ever seen? Not only was he incredibly gorgeous in his fitted suits, but even in his casual wear, he looked like he hopped right out of a magazine.
As he stepped past me onto my front porch, I had to grip the back pockets of my shorts to keep from reaching out and stroking my fingers through his dark strands. Every time I was around him, I had this staggering urge to touch him—though he tended to flinch, even when he was expecting it.
“See something you like?” he hollered. Talon was already standing next to the expensive car, which I barely took notice of. I had no idea how long I’d been standing there looking out into oblivion.
Ignoring him, I quickly shut the front door, locked up, and made my way to the car. A light summer breeze picked up just as I reached the driveway. It swirled around me like a playful child. Something strong and masculine-scented floated in the air, and I knew it was Talon’s cologne straightaway. I wasn’t good with fragrances, but it reminded me of sandalwood and vetiver, a smell I was only familiar with because I had a candle with that name on the label. The combination of the two scents was potent in the best way.
Which meant the coupling of the cologne with Talon’s innate sex appeal was going to make this twenty-minute car ride torturous. I must have done something bad in a past life.
I went to grab the handle of the car, but Talon was there before I could even reach the door. He opened passenger side and waited patiently for me to slip inside.
His gesture surprised me. Not only because it was him being chivalrous, but because no man besides my father had everopened a door for me. Not Jeremy. Not any of the boyfriends before him. No one.
