“Bye, Franny,” I said before I hung up the phone.
There was a commotion out in the hallway, and as I stood from my desk, Jeremy traipsed inside, nearly colliding with a desk as the school principal followed behind him.
“Baby,” he slurred. “I knew I’d find you here. Why’d you leave me like that?”
I had no idea what he was talking about. With my cell phone still in hand, I clicked on the record button and placed it on my desk.
“Do you know this man, Mrs. Beckett?” the principal asked, but before I could reply, Jeremy shouted.
“Her name is not Mrs. Beckett!”
“Jeremy, I think it's best that you go. My class is about to start.”
“No! I’m not leaving until you and I make up.”
The bell rang overhead, and the principal shook his head.
“I’ll get him out of here. Give me just a second,” I assured him.
“Get him out, then come to my office. I’ll have the secretary watch your class.”
Shit. I was going to get in trouble for this, and I hadn’t even done anything. The principal never had teachers in his office unless they were being reprimanded for something. I watched him stomp out of my classroom, then I focused on my ex.
“Jeremy, listen to me right now. We aren’t a thing, and we never will be a thing again. You’re getting married tomorrow, remember?”
“But you’re supposed to still be with me. You weren’t supposed to go find someone else. I’m the best you are ever going to find.”
God, I’d forgottenjusthow self-centered the man was.
From my desk, I saw Liam as he passed my doorway, and I quickly caught his eye.
“Need any help, Mrs. Beckett?”
“Yes, please,” I replied as Jeremy continued to mumble to himself, sitting down at one of the student desks.
Thankfully, Liam was able to lift Jeremy out of the chair and maneuver my ex’s arm around his shoulders. I grabbed my phone and bag while setting the pop quizzes on the end of my desk for the secretary. As I turned around, Liam had only made it as far as the door. Jeremy was dragging his feet, literally.
“Aren’t you coming—” He hiccupped. “—baby?”
I rolled my eyes and walked over to them, doing my best to help Liam drag Jeremy to the front office. The students looked at us with both shock and curiosity. Jeremy’s family was well-known in Ashfield and in Tennessee, with his father’s gubernatorial billboards plastered along the highway.
“You’ll still be my mistress, right, baby? The sex isn’t good with that woman… Tal… Tail—”
“Talia? And no. I have no desire to be in your presence ever again.”
Finally, we reached the office, where the resource officer was waiting with the town sheriff. The principal wasn’t going to stand for someone drunk in his hallways, disrupting the students.
When he handed my ex off, I thanked Liam, then followed Mr. Donahue to his office. The day was definitely not going to get any better.
“I’m on probation. Can you believe that?” I asked Alex as she hugged Molly and Eloise. She asked if I could watch the girls last-minute, as she and Nate had an appointment that evening she’d forgotten about.
I wasn’t sure what kind of appointments happened after 5:00 p.m. except the recreational kind that required no children around.
“It’s ridiculous. You should have Dad talk to him. Aren’t they old friends?”
“Yeah, but I guess I get it.”
“Don’t let them push you around. This place looks great, by the way. I’m sorry I didn’t come by sooner.”
