Someonemust have tripped overZane’scorpse because several of them tumbled to the ground, continuing the fight as they rolled across the pavement.

Sebastianbound from the fight, still in wolf form, and limped toward me.Hisbeautiful gray fur was streaked with blood and eyes gleamed with a thirst for destruction.Hegrowled as he opened his mouth and wrapped his jaw around the skeleton’s leg, breaking it free from the rest of its body.Mycaptor’s hand fell from my mouth as it lost its balance and crashed to the concrete, taking me with it.

Wetumbled down together, andIlanded with a thud, scraping my hands and knees.Iwinced at the searing pain, but at leastIwas partially free.

Iheaved in a deep breath asIrecovered from the fall.Atwinge of the salty sea air in the distance filled me.

OnceIcaught my breath,Icried, “Sebastian!”

Theunnaturally large skeleton’s eyes glowed with violet menace as it turned to my husband, butSebastianripped its arm from the socket, freeing me at last.Oncethat horrific embrace was opened,Icrawled out of this skeletal cage.

Sebastiantore atMr.Boneswith fierce determination.Aftertearing off each limb using fangs and claws, he ripped each rib out, without even pausing for breath, and scattered bones across the asphalt.

Oncethe creature was dismembered and no longer a threat,Sebastianpaused and gazed at me.

“It’sokay,”Isaid. “I’mfree.”Placingmy hand on my heart,Iapproached him. “Thankyou.”

Movementfrom above caught our attention.Lucashad shifted into his massive dragon form and soared overhead.Heswooped down and grabbedGuntherin his claws, who then flailed and screamed at a high pitch.

Maxescaped from the edge of the brawl and threw a fiery bolt atLucas, and it hit his magnificent wing.Isucked in a breath.Sebastianwas already hurt.Icouldn’t let anyone else get hurt, if not killed, because of my mistake.

“No!”Zoescreamed.Shehurled something small and fiery atMax, who groaned in pain.

Lucaslanded a few dozen feet away and stumbled.Scorchmarks marred his orange and purple scales, yet still managed to use a claw to keepGuntherpinned.

Ihad to do something.Now.Icouldn’t physically overpower these monsters, butIhad something they didn’t have—my voice.Iopened my mouth and released a low, soothing siren song to calm the chaos.Thefighting slowed as everyone pulled apart with a dazed look in their eyes.Theproblem was that my magic appeared to affect my friends as well asGunther,Violet, andMax.

Damn,Ineeded to do more.Irushed over and pulled silver-enhanced handcuffs fromZoe’stoolbelt, using it to restrainMax’shands behind his back.WhileIdid so,Ifocused my voice on my friends to help them recover, and thenImoved on to bindViolet.

Iran back over and sank to my knees beside my wounded wolf.

“Sebastian.”Isighed and wrapped my arms around him, keeping careful not to touch any of the gashes.

SEBASTIAN

Mymate was back at my side.Giannaran her fingers through my fur, and her touch soothed me whileIrecovered from the fight beneath the full moon.Iinhaled her scent, and it overshadowed some of the pain from all the gashes.

“You’rehurt.”Thepain in her voice tugged at me. “WhatcanIdo?”

Diegostumbled over, coming out of the daze from her siren song. “I’vegot it.”Hekneeled at my side and grunted, then turned to the others. “Nobodygive me shit about this.”Aftera pause, he added, “Ever.”

Thenhe bent down and licked one of the wounds on my flank.

Thestrange sensation of my buddy’s warm tongue on my fur startled me, andIshifted back to human form.

Diegojumped backward, skidding onto his butt on the concrete. “Dude, you couldn’t have waited untilIwas done?”Hegrumbled. “Youturn butt-ass naked whileI’mtrying to help heal your sorry ass?”

Lucaschuckled from several feet away.Iglanced over at him, now back in human form with a scorched arm, and dressed in the pants from his costume.

“Ah, sorry, man.”Ishrugged. “Itfelt weird, andIshifted back on instinct.”OnwitnessingDiego’shorrified expression,Iadded, “Wouldyou prefer licking my fur?”

Diegoscowled. “IwishIwere dead.”Thengrumbled, “Literally.”

Lucashowled in laughter.Thenhe turned to me. “Youokay,Sebastian?”Theamusement on his face morphed into concern.

Iwasn’t in the best state after being clawed and bitten and singed by magic in the fight, butI’drecover.

“I’llbe fine.”Nudgingmy chin in his direction,Iasked, “How’syour arm?”
