Aftereveryone confirmed, she added, “Itwill be fun.Achance to dress up and have fun with spooky fall beverages without having to wait until the fall.Sluttycostumes, ladies!”Shegave them a conspiratorial wink. “Andgents, if you like.”
Icaught her gaze, picturing her in the naughtiest of costumes.Toavoid getting an inappropriate erection during dinner,Irefocused on the meal.Aftertaking a healthy sip of white wine,Itook a large bite of the chicken with mushrooms, covered in the flavorful sauce.
Afterwe finished dinner, we moved into the living room forScrabble.Lucaschanged the record and the familiar sound of “SummerNights” from theGreasemovie played.
“Grease?That’snot your usual style,”Diegopointed out.
“What?Idon’t need to be pigeonholed in my musical tastes.Ifound it in a bin at the record store and thought it would be fun.”
Alittle too much fun.Aswe drank and tried to play our version ofScrabble, which involved making words up and trying to convince our teammates that it was a real word, someone would break into song, interrupting the game.
When“GreasedLightning” came on,Lucasjumped up from the sofa, grabbedShadow’sfur brush, and sang into it like it was a microphone.
“Comeon.”Hegestured forDiegoand me to join him.
Diegobrushed him off, andItried to get back to the game, but everyone’s attention was diverted byLucas’santics.Hisenthusiasm was contagious, as it had been when “BoysDon’tCry” played at theCureconcert.Igave up and joined him.
Motioningmy arm up and to the side as in the movie,IsangKenickie’slines.WhenLucasgrabbedDiego’sarm, he didn’t pull away this time and even cracked a smile as he sang backup vocals.
Theladies cozied up next to each other on the sofa and cheered, encouraging us to heighten the dramatic flair.Weacted out parts we remembered from the movie, such as carefully taking the time to style our hair.
Thegame was abandoned.Instead, we drank more as we took turns singing along to the soundtrack.Itook the lead on “Aloneat theDrive-InMovie,” acting out my anguish at being stranded but turning downLucas’soffer for a makeshift cat brush microphone.
ThenGiannasauntered across the living room as she sang, “ThereAreWorseThingsICouldDo.”Iloved hearing my wife sing and would take any opportunity to do so.Shehad an enchanting voice that soothed me, but in quite a different, inexplicable way from her scent.
Atthe reprise of “LookatMe,I’mSandraDee,”Lucasjumped up with the cat brush to be the star.Weall joined in for the backup vocals, even reservedZoerelaxing visibly as she joined in.
Atsome point,Lucasturned theTVon so we could watch the movie rather than listen to the soundtrack.Atthe end, when “You’retheOnethatIWant” started,Giannatook my hand and pulled me over to her.WereenactedJohnTravoltaandOliviaNewton-John’sroles.
Giannasang, “Meditatemy erection,” motioning down her body the wayOliviaNewton-Johndid in the funhouse, and snickers followed.
Ah, another delicious misheard lyric from my wife.Whenshe sang in the shower,Ilistened to her beautiful voice—yet it often led to me chuckling in response to her singing a nonsense line.
Novasquirmed on the sofa, barely keeping it together.Hereyes shined as if holding back tears of laughter.EvensurlyDiegowas wrestling to keep his amusement in.
Whenthe song ended,Novaburst out, “Comeagain now,Gianna.Whatwas that line about an erection?”
“What?”Giannashrugged with innocence. “That’swhatSandysays.”
“Pleasesing it for us again,”Novapleaded.
Giannaextended her hand down to her hip with a defying flourish. “Nope.Songis over.”
“Letme get this straight,”Novasaid. “Meditatemy erection, is that right?”
“Yes, that’sexactlywhatIsaid,”Giannaemphasized.
“No, no, no.”Novawagged her index finger and chuckled. “Erection? No, it’s in mydirection.”
Giannahuffed and slanted her head down. “Thatdoesn’t make any sense,Nova.”
“Buterection does?”Nova’sbrows arched skyward.
“Yeah.”Giannamotioned down her body. “See, she’s motioning to herself to show how she’s standingerect.Youknow, upright.Itmakestotalsense.”
“Kindof,”Isaid to back her up, not that she needed it.NothingembarrassedGianna.
LucasandDiegothen argued if it made sense or not.
