She brushed my arm. “You don’t have to do that, Lucas.” She slanted a smile. “I’ll tell you again right now. I want to marry you. I can’t wait until we do.”

I pumped my fist into the air. “Yes! We’re getting married!” I declared.

Visitors and staff around the courtyard cheered. Zoe tipped her head and covered her face.

“Sorry, I know you’re not crazy over attention like this.”

“It’s all right. It’s big news.” She put her hand down. “Wait, the ring.”

“Shit.” In all the excitement, I had forgotten to put the ring on her finger. I took it out of the velvet box and slid it onto her ring finger. Dragonflies danced inside me, or at least that’s what it felt like. “A witch created this ring. She was in love with a dragon and worked that design into many of her pieces. See.” I pointed to the ring.

She gaped at the ring. “Oh, yes. It’s stunning. Perfect.”

“It looks wonderful on you.” I stared in awe. “You’ll always know your dragon loves you.”

She beamed at me. “I already do. And I love you, too.”

My heart raced in excitement. I blurted, “It has protective qualities as well—like an amulet.”

“That’s wonderful. I love it, Lucas.” She stared at the ring again. “Every time I look at it, I’ll think of you.” She bent her head back and grinned at me. “I already do that often enough.”

“Good.” I smiled. “Because you’re always on my mind.”

I took her face in my hands, leaned down, and kissed her. It felt amazing to be able to kiss her at will, touch her, caress her. After being unable to do so while in stone, I’d never take that for granted again.

After we pulled apart, I exhaled, unconsciously pumping my chest out. “I want to tell our good news to the world,” I declared and then stopped myself. “No, this is about you, Zoe. I know you’re not into all the flash and attention.”

“If there’s ever a time I want to celebrate, it’s now and with you.” She smiled at me and then raised her hand, showing off the ring to the curious crowd. More applause and congratulations followed.

I beamed with pride at my mate—soon to be my bride.

CHAPTER18

ZOE

Lucie was in the kitchen making a snack when I returned to my apartment. Her dark-blonde hair was pulled into a messy bun, and she wore an oversized Lake Winnipesaukee T-shirt. I told her the news.

“Wow, congratulations!” She cocked her head. “Oh no, does that mean you’ll be moving out?”

“Yes, I’m moving in with Lucas,” I replied.

“In the house he shares with Nova and Diego?”

“That’s the one.”

“Will it be crowded?”

“I don’t think so. It’s a big house. They pretty much stay in their side of the house.”

“If you want another roommate, you know who to call.” She pointed to herself. “I’ve been so busy with supes looking to move to Salem.”

“It’s a good thing that I’m moving out of here then,” I said with a smile. “One extra room for you.”

“Yes. I’m extra picky, though, when it comes to living with someone. I’ve heard too many horror stories.”

“I hope I’m not one of them,” I joked.

“No, you were ideal. This worked out perfectly. I hope I can find someone as drama-free as you.”
