I ran a hand through my hair. “We had one night together a long time ago, and that was it. When she saw me at the club the other night, she started coming around.”

Zoe stopped in the stairwell and faced me. “Why didn’t you tell me about her?”

I shrugged and leaned on the railing. “There’s nothing to tell.”

“I saw her leaving the house one day.” Zoe fixed her probing gaze on me.

“Yes, she came by, and I told her to leave.”

“You could have mentioned it.”

“Why? It was insignificant. I wasn’t going to let something like that ruin our night.”

She pursed her lips. “I’d rather know than have you keep things from me.”

“What about you keeping your relationship with Bryan from me?” I heard the defensiveness in my tone and hated it.

Her eyes widened with surprise. “That’s different.”

“How?”

“I was thinking of you.”

I arched my brows and crossed my arms. “And how is that different?” I was doing the exact same thing, trying not to hurt her over nothing.

“Come on, Lucas. I don’t have a past like you.”

I motioned to her. “Now you’re going to go there and throw that in my face?”

She wrinkled her nose. “Lucas.”

“I’m sorry I haven’t told you every detail of my life, but I didn’t think there was anything to tell since nothing was going on. I didn’t want to worry you about something that meant this little.” I motioned with my fingertips, spreading them barely a centimeter apart.

She huffed. “I saw her at the club and then near your house. And then, I started to think things—and think the worst.” Zoe glanced to the distance.

“You didn’t think that I…” I didn’t finish the sentence.

She shrugged. “She was fawning all over you. You’ve been acting weird, like you’ve been keeping something from me.” She motioned with her palms up. “You can’t blame me for thinking something’s up, can you?”

Her eventhinkingI could cheat on her twisted my gut. Did she think so little of me?

I stared into her eyes. “You don’t trust me?” My pain was reflected in my tone.

She turned away. “I didn’t say that.”

Didn’t she know she was my mate? The only one for me? The muscles corded at the back of my neck. I’d rather lose the ability to fly than lose her.

I swallowed hard. Maybe not. Maybe she didn’t feel the same way about me.

Her lack of faith in me hurt. “You don’t trust me.” It was a statement this time. “It’s clear by your reaction.”

Zoe exhaled. “Once again, I didn’t say that. I’m a detective. If I see something suspicious, I investigate it.”

“Suspicious?” I arched my brows. “I’m not a freakin’ case, Zoe. I’m your mate.”

She glanced at the stairs going down. A couple squeezed by us. Once they walked by, she said, “You’re right.”

Even with her admitting that, it burned hard. After all this time, could she really suspect that I’d cheat on her?
