I laughed. “She’d be pissed if I put attention on her like that.”

“What can you do that is something for the two of you?”

“What do you mean?”

“Perhaps someplace special. Or a throwback to where you first met.”

I cocked my head and gave Sebastian a look.

Diego laughed. “Oh, right, I remember where you met. A proposal in a strip club isn’t necessarily the epitome of romance.”

“And I’d bombed proposing to her on the stage there when I was under the influence of sprite magic. She turned me down, rightly so.”

“Where else did you go when you first got together?” Sebastian asked.

I tapped my lips. “We went sledding, but it’s not the right season for that.” I clapped my hands together. “We went to a bonsai place. Oh, I could do something with that. Put the ring on a branch.” I shook my head. “No, wait, I’ve got it!”

“What?” Diego asked.

I didn’t wait to tell him. Instead, I dashed out to put my plan into action.

CHAPTER17

ZOE

We had the next day off, and Lucas declared that he was taking me out.

“Where are we going?” I asked him.

“Leave it up to me.”

I drove us in my black Fiat to Boston. Otherwise, I’d be a terrible backseat driver while in the passenger seat. We parked in the lot beneath the Boston Common and walked through the Boston Public Garden. The fragrance of many colorful flowers in bloom surrounded me. Cascading trees edged the lagoon. Families enjoyed an easy ride on the Swan Boats.

Lucas admired the gardens in bloom. “Magnificent, isn’t it? It’s the oldest public botanical garden in the U.S.”

“And it’s such a gorgeous day.” The sun was shining, the sky was blue and cloudless, and it wasn’t too hot to be oppressive.

We meandered down Boylston Street and stopped for sandwiches at an outdoor café. I ate a brie and gouda panini, and Lucas devoured a meat-lovers sub while we people-watched.

After we finished, Lucas grinned. “Time for our next destination.”

“It’s been a great day so far,” I said. “Quite enjoyable.”

“I hope so.” His blue eyes gleamed with a hopeful glint.

What was that about?

We drove over to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, one that we’d visited soon after we’d met. After we wandered around the different floors admiring the impressive paintings and art, we entered the circular library. My gaze scanned over the books in the library. When I turned to Lucas, he was staring at me, an odd smile on his face. Was it wistful?

“Everything okay?” I asked.

“Yes, yes, of course.” He ran a hand through his hair, appearing flustered.

What was going on?

“I’m just looking forward to going to the courtyard,” he added. “You know how I love it there.”

Something seemed strange about his tone. He couldn’t stand still, appearing restless.
