And now I was finally free!

I outstretched my wings and soared to take out that little bugger who’d imprisoned me. Marty flew away with a shriek, his tiny wings beating furiously to escape my wrath.

He wouldn’t out fly me. I would fry that damn sprite.

Dozens of other sprites flew at me, protesting, their tiny voices like an out-of-tune metal song.

“Leave him alone, dragon.”

“Back off!”

They wouldn’t stop me. Not even an army of them could. I could take them all out with one blast of fire, sending them all hurtling to the earth like ash crispies.

“Lucas, don’t,” Zoe shouted.

Why the hell not? Didn’t she know what he’d done? He’d cursed me in stone, leaving me unable to talk to her, touch her, be with her? He’d stolen my free will, and he had to pay. Nobody kept me from my mate. No one.

“Don’t hurt them,” she begged.

Why not? He’d hurt me. He’d hurtus.

Yes, it was only one of them. Ursula had talked him into undoing the spell that cursed me. Still, they’d followed me here from Bermuda, and in doing so, had turned my life upside down. He’d messed with me three times. I’d made a fool of myself on vacation and then back at my former club. I’d had to sit as an ornament in my own garden, deprived of the presence of everyone I loved and the comforts of my life. He deserved to be punished.

Harshly.

“Lucas, please don’t. You’ll make it worse. Come down and talk to me.”

Her plea broke through my fury. How could I not respond when my mate asked me to do something, especially with that pleading tone in her voice? I struggled with it. I desperately wanted payback, yet if she was begging me not to do so, there had to be a reason. I hesitated and glanced down at her. She appeared smaller than ever. She waved her arms back and forth over her head. Then she beckoned me to come to her.

Some sense pierced through my fury. My heart jolted, and my dragon purred like Shadow on a Sunday morning.

What should I do? The urge to carry out my revenge clashed with the yearning to return to her. I stared at her. She’d win every time.

I heard her in my head.Come to me.

Sweet purple skies. Our mate connection was restored!

I flew down to her, my wings as light as a dragonfly’s. When I landed, I shifted back to human form.

“Lucas!” She rushed over and embraced me.

I wrapped my arms around her. “Zoe.” I kissed the top of her head. “My mate.”

Her body pressed against mine warmed me so after all that time as cold hard stone. That argument in the club had been such a waste of time. I shouldn’t have been so defensive. Having her back in my arms again proved that I’d made the right choice. With her arms around me and scent filling my nose, my world became right once more.

After we pulled apart, Ursula flew toward us. “Lucas, we owe you an apology for what happened.” She turned to Marty, who’d followed her yet remained a few feet back. “Marty?”

He pointed at me. “He was about to fry me.”

“Marty,” she repeated with more of a warning in her tone.

He lowered his head and huffed. “I apologize for cursing you.”

“Why the hell did you do that, little dude?”

“I thought you were trying to hurt me. And I was still pissed off that you told others about us.”

“So, you made me make a fool out of myself by doing things I didn’t want to do?”
