“See you in a minute. I’ll meet you back here.” He walked to the opposite side of the club.
In the ladies’ room, I checked my appearance in the mirror. My cheeks were flushed from dancing, eyes bright. What a great night.
I headed out the door and searched for Lucas. He wasn’t here where I’d last seen him. I waited a couple of minutes before I walked over to the men’s room in case I misunderstood. Maybe I was supposed to meet him over there.
It was easy to see him in the crowd with his height and roguish blond hair. He appeared to be talking to someone, but I couldn’t see who.
I walked over and my heart dropped.
It was her.
The woman with black hair and abundant cleavage from the club.
The woman I’d seen creeping around his house.
The woman who now wore a short dress that barely covered her long legs. She trailed her fingers down Lucas’s biceps and stared up at him with a flirtatious look.
What in all the potent potions was up?
Deep breath.Don’t freak out.Exhale.
Deep breath.Stay calm.Exhale.
Deep breath. This might not be as bad as it looks. Don’t immediately jump to him cheating on you.Exhale.
But then why had he been acting skittish? Why did she appear sheepish as if she was caught? What was going on between them?
Pain stabbed at me like a thousand icicles. If Lucas betrayed me…
Had I neglected our relationship despite my best intentions? Had I been so focused on work once more that he sought attention elsewhere?
Or did he wake up and realize I’m not as exciting as he was, that he could find someone who was more like him in seeking pleasure and a good time?
An urge to run at them and demand answers rushed through me with quick force. I took three more deep breaths before I trusted myself not to react in a blind, defensive rage.
If Lucas was cheating on me, I had to know—no matter how devastating the betrayal.
After taking a deep breath, I rolled my shoulders back and mustered up the courage to face him and the truth. I squared my shoulders and strode over to confront them. My hands shook at my sides.
“Hello,” I declared, my voice sounding strained.
Both turned to me and stared. Lucas’s eyes widened in pure horror.
I trusted Lucas. I had to believe in us, but I couldn’t deny what I saw.
Something was up.
I fixed a dead-eye gaze on him. “Am I interrupting?”
CHAPTER10
LUCAS
Why here? Why now? Why like this?
Running into Linda put a damper on an otherwise fantastic night. I suspected it wasn’t a coincidence, and when I pushed her on it, she admitted to following me.
When Zoe stepped up to us, I was relieved at first. She was visible proof of what I’d been telling Linda—I was with someone else. But when I glimpsed the pain in Zoe’s eyes, which she tried to hide behind a brave, neutral expression, I regretted every second.
