Once we were all seated around the table, Diego said, “Thanks for saving me. And sorry I was a dick about it.”
Lucas gave him a lopsided grin. “Don’t worry, we’re used to you being like that.”
“And you’re better than you were when we first met you,” Sebastian teased.
“That’s because of Nova.” Diego reached over and squeezed my shoulder.
Gianna picked up her glass of Chardonnay and tapped it with a knife. “We survived another close call. You know what I think this calls for?”
“A celebration,” we all replied in unison.
She laughed. “You’re acting like you’ve heard me say this before.”
“Is champagne best served cold?” I teased.
“Indeed,” she agreed with a twitch of a smile. “But tonight is all about you and Diego and having you both back in our lives. You decide whatever you want us to do.”
Diego and I exchanged a look.
“I could be up for a board game,” I said. “One of our twisted versions.”
Our skewed versions often led to a murky finish as to who actually won but was way more entertaining.
“And maybe a movie?” Diego suggested.
“I think you have the full collection of Monty Python.”
“Oh hell, I don’t want to leave and look for some vamp.” Lucas pouted.
“Come on, Lucas.” Zoe chuckled. “If we find her fast enough, we can come back and join the party.”
“Deal.” He looped his arm through hers and walked to the front door.
Diego turned to me, his face creased with worry. “And if they don’t find her?”
“We go on with our lives.” I squeezed his arm. “She already took enough time away from us.”
His expression brightened. “Then we’ll have to make up for lost time.”
“Uh oh,” Gianna turned to Sebastian. “Do we need to disappear so they can have alone time?”
“My place or yours?” he replied.
I laughed. “Raincheck on the game. We’re going back to my apartment.” I stood. “It’s been a long, long night, and I could use some rest.”
Gianna caught my gaze, a hint of mischief on her lips. I could practically hear her thoughts:Hopefully, you’ll be doing more than resting.
She tapped her thighs and then stood. “And on that note, let’s skedaddle so these two can—” she cleared her throat and added “—rest.”
I chuckled as I shook my head. Gianna, subtle as always.
After we returned to my apartment, I turned to Diego. “I think I’m ready for bed.” I slanted my head. “Are you coming with me?”
His eyes gleamed with speculation. “Do you want me there?”
I touched his cheek. “Of course. Always.”
His lips stretched into a smile. “Let me help you upstairs.” He scooped me into his arms.
