“We need to do something to save him,” Sebastian added. “And do it fast.”
Chapter 14
Nova
All the books in the floor-to-ceiling shelves surrounding me swirled in my vision, becoming a cyclone dominated by deep reds and rich browns. My heart thumped louder, echoing in my head like the quickening tempo of drums. I couldn’t believe this was happening. Whatever Diana had done to Diego was hurting him.
“You’ve got to stop her,” I pleaded to Sebastian. I clenched my hands into fists, visualizing casting that monster into the sunlight. Would her body smolder slowly as her body burned? Or would she scream and quickly be silenced as she turned into a torch before falling to ashes?
Whoa, that went dark. That wasn’t like me. I didn’t fantasize about people dying. Then again, she wasn’t human anymore, and the way she’d exerted such control over Diego showed she didn’t have a shred of humanity in her.
“I need help to get Diego away from her,” Sebastian replied. “He’s under her influence and not cooperating.”
“I’m coming,” Lucas volunteered. His gaze passed over all of us, from Pandora, Cassandra, Zoe, Gianna, and me.
I exhaled and gave him a small nod while trying not to sink into despair.
“Yes, that’s a good plan,” Pandora agreed.
“Come as fast as you can,” Sebastian said. “They think I’ve left, but I’m just staying far enough back so they don’t know I’m following them.” He noted landmarks of his location on the waterfront.
“Be right there. I’m going to shift and fly in.”
“You can’t do that,” Sebastian protested.
“Why not?” Lucas replied.
“They’ll see you. That will totally kill what I’m trying to do by following them undetected.”
“So what?” Lucas answered. “This isn’t some clandestine stakeout. They’re going to see me when I land, and we confront him.”
“Don’t start bickering, you two,” Gianna declared with an impatient gesture. “When you get started, it never ends. Both of you trying to get in the last word.
“We won’t, Gianna,” Sebastian declared. “Lucas, tryto be inconspicuous.” He ended the call.
Lucas pressed his lips together and muttered. “Son of a bitch snuck in the last word.”
Zoe tipped her head. “Lucas.” In two syllables, her tone warned him thatThis isn’t the time.
“I know.” He bent down and kissed her on the cheek. “We’ll let you know what’s going on.”
“I’ll come meet you. We also have this vamp to deal with,” Zoe said, “And I don’t want her slipping away.”
Dianabetternot. If she was responsible for what happened to Diego, and all signs were pointing toduh, of course, she couldn’t escape.
“Do you think you can both convince Diego to come here?” she asked.
“Yes,” Pandora agreed. “It will be better for his safety to get him away from her.”
“And it’s safer that we try to reverse the spell on him here.” She exhaled “If something doesn’t go as planned, we have access to other options.”
My ribs tightened. Cassandra’s words echoed in my head—if something doesn’t go as planned. The potential of that happening was too high for any sense of comfort.
Lucas grunted. “It might be difficult. He’s stubborn even when he’s not under some vamp’s evil spell. Between the two of us, we’ll have a better shot.”
How would Diego react? At any other time, he’d at least listen to reasoning even if he’d decide against it. Being under this Diana’s influence made his actions unpredictable. Which made how the night played out just as erratic and difficult to plan.
“Ok, we have our next course of action planned out,” Pandora stated. “Lucas, you’re going to help Sebastian with Diego. The best option is if you can get him here. Zoe, drive over and make sure Diana doesn’t get away. Pandora and I are going to help finish up this potion for Nova.”
