I clutched the handle more tightly and moved the bag back a few inches. “Not your concern.”

“Is it a ring?” She rubbed her naked finger where she once wore my ring. “You’re not thinking of proposing to the witch, are you?”

“That’s not your business.” My muscles tensed. “Why are you following me?”

She slanted her gaze at me. “Why would you say that?”

“Because this town is big enough that I shouldn’t run into you each time I go out.”

Her lips curled into a small smile that didn’t meet her cold eyes. “What can I say? It must be kismet.”

“It most certainly is not.” I shook my head with vigor as if it could erase her suggestion. “What do you want, Diana?”

“I already told you. I want to catch up.”

Warning flags sprung from my brain. I narrowed my gaze at her. “Why?”

She pouted. “Because breaking up was a mistake. We belong together.”

“Oh hell no.” I stepped back.

“Diego,” she continued, “We were engaged. I made you immortal. That binds us together eternally.”

Was she crazy? She broke my freakin’ heart, and it almost destroyed me. “Whatever bond we had you broke years ago.”

“Wrong, Diego, we’ll always be bonded.”

Although every part of me itched to rush away from her, my feet seemed cemented to the brick. “What’s gotten into you? Why would you think that I would welcome you back with open arms?”

“Because what we had was special.”

“No, it was artificial.” I thought I was madly in love with Diana, swept up in her beauty and her cosmopolitan lifestyle. I idealized her and her nature as a vampire, thinking how romantic it would be to become immortal with her. What a fool. She didn’t love me.

I didn’t understand true love until I fell in love with Nova. She was real. Her heart was pure. We took care of each other. She’d never hurt me like Diana had.

“Give us another chance.” She slipped closer and stroked my jawline with her cold fingers.

I turned my head and stepped to the side. “No, I’ve moved on.”

“With a witch? She’ll leave you eventually, Diego. After all, she’s mortal.”

I recoiled and struggled to keep my expression neutral so as not to reveal any reaction. Diana went right for the jugular, but in this case metaphorically. She preyed on emotions, and it seemed to invigorate her as if she were fueled by negative energy as much as blood.

“But you and I, we can be together forever.” Her eyes flickered as if victorious.

I snorted. “Funny, how those words sound familiar.” I pretended to think about it, placing my finger on my chin. “Oh right, because you said that to me before and later dumped me.”

Diana’s lips twitched. “Things are different now.”

“Why?”

She fluttered her eyelashes. “Seeing you again after all that time resurrected old feelings.” Her lips turned down. “And seeing you with someone else, that really did it.”

“Hurts, doesn’t it?”

“Yes.” She raised her chin. “I thought I didn’t care and tried to shake it off over the last several months, but I can’t. So, I want to get back together.”

Oh, hell. Nova had come to the Halloween ball with me as emotional support for when I faced Diana. Unfortunately, the plan seemed to have backfired as it appeared to have invoked her jealousy—or greed.
