“While walking to work last night, I ran into someone—unexpected.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “Apparently, she enjoyed her visit to Salem last Halloween and wants to come live here.” His mouth twisted with bitterness.
My gut clenched. No, please don’t let it be who leapt to mind.
“Not the she-devil-who-shall-not-be-named?” Lucas asked.
“The very one,” Diego confirmed with a somber nod.
“Diana?” Sebastian’s eyes widened.
Ugh, it was her. His ex.
“What part of not naming the she-devil did you miss, man?” Lucas scoffed.
“Why didn’t you tell us until now?” Sebastian asked.
“I was waiting until Nova got home,” Diego replied. “She deserves to hear it first.”
Lucky me.
“Why the hell does she think she’ll be welcome here?” Gianna barked.
Diego shook his head, saying nothing.
I blinked at him, not wanting this to be real. “Your ex is moving to Salem?”
He tipped his head back and groaned. “She’s already here.”
“Oh.” My stomach slipped closer to the floor. What did this mean for us?
Thoughts sprang across my mind, coming together like the threads of a spider weaving an orb. Was Diana the reason why he’d been acting so antsy lately? Did he want to end our relationship to resurrect one with her?
No, he despised her. I’d witnessed their exchange last Halloween with his bitter reaction to her presence. Why would I think something so off the wall?
When he finally lifted his gaze to meet mine, he said, “Do you know if she contacted the Network for a place to live?”
My skin felt hotter than it had under the sun earlier. “No.”
“Can you stop her from living here?”
I raised my hand. “For what reason?”
He scowled. “I’m guessing me not wanting her to isn’t enough.”
His unhappiness at Diana’s arrival provided me withsomesatisfaction. At least, he wasn’t celebrating her return.
“No,” I replied with a sigh. “Unless she’s committed a crime, we don’t have any grounds for it.”
“Damn.” He pounded his fist on the edge of the sofa.
I stared at my vampire boyfriend, trying to decipher him. He’d been an unreadable enigma lately. Sure, he hated his ex, but he showed more passion in his loathing towards her than he had for most things. That could be a problem. After all, he’d been so in love with her that he’d proposed. He’d become immortal to be with her.
Forever…
Those were some intense emotions. My stomach churned with discomfort. In comparison, we hadn’t made any sort of commitment to each other. The only reason we lived under the same roof was due to circumstances that brought us together.
The insecurities that had simmered earlier now had lethal fuel in the form of a tall, willowy blond vamp who was back in town.
I struggled to keep from sounding jealous. “What else did she say?”
