“Let’s put it this way—I ended up being on the menu instead.”
She laughed. “In a good way for you, I hope.”
As I pictured what had unfolded, my cheeks warmed. Diego could read my body like a well-loved and often reread book. He had an intuitive way of knowing exactly what I needed.
Gianna laughed. “Guess so.”
“What?” I glanced at her.
“It’s written all over your face. I’m guessing it turned out to be averygood night.”
Right, I’d never be able to pull off a poker face. “It was good.” After all, it did lead to mutual pleasure and multiple orgasms on my part. No one would ever complain about that. “Weird with how it started with him turned on by my throbbing, bleeding knee but still good.”
She nodded. “Does that mean things might be better between you now?”
I glanced down at the table, wishing I could say yes. After a quick jaunt through our recent encounters, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something still wasn’t right. What it was exactly, I couldn’t pinpoint. I had the sense he was keeping something from me.
After a heavy exhale, I forced a smile. “I hope so.”
“That was not convincing.” She leaned back and raised her index finger. “But I’m not going to press you. If you want to talk about it, we’ll talk.”
“Thanks.” I’d revealed enough of my worries for one night. it was time to shake them off and have fun.
The opening notes of “Come on Eileen” played. We faced each other with a silent moment as if screamingOh yeah!
“Wehaveto dance.” Gianna climbed out of the seat and pulled me to my feet.
“Okay, okay.” My legs weren’t as long as hers, so I shuffled to keep up. At least, it would keep me from analyzing what was going on between Diego and me.
A few other groups of people also danced their way onto the floor. She strode out to the floor on her heels and spun with a flourish raising her arms to the skies.
I joined in, the cocktail helping me loosen my inhibitions. That was one thing I envied about Gianna. I definitely didn’t have that same wild and free vibe spirit that she had. Sometimes, I wished I could be more extroverted and vivacious as her, but I was an introverted, bookish type. Reading was my refuge. It always had been. No matter what I was facing, I could escape to another world through the eyes of another character and leave mine for a while. Staying home and reading among the comforts of my space let me refresh my mental batteries, so I could deal with the reality of the world again.
However, as the Bard noted, “All that glitters is not gold.” Sure, Gianna was gorgeous and vivacious, drawing people to her, but she also had parental issues and the dubious luck of capturing the wrong attention. She called herself a demon magnet since she’d been kidnapped more than once for their nefarious purposes. Never judge a person without knowing more than what was on the surface. They might be hiding wounds that were beyond imaginable.
Gianna twirled with a broad smile. I was so glad that her hardships didn’t kill her exuberance. In fact, the restraints on her freedom might have led her to embrace it even more.
Soon, everyone on the floor was dancing together. Voices grew louder around us as more and more people sang theToo ra loopart. When the music sped up, so did we. Everyone on the floor did a quick-foot sort of scramble. So much fun.
I almost forgot about my concerns about Diego.
Almost.
I spun around as I danced, maybe I could convince myself that everything was going to be okay.
A prickling at the back of my neck made me stop and turn. I had the distinct sensation of someone watching me—and not in a good way.
My time at the Network had taught me not to ignore those clues. They could be a warning that would be dire to overlook.
I glanced around, searching for the cause of that wariness. Many people around the club had their attention somewhat focused on those of us on the floor. That was to be expected since we were dancing up a hailstorm. Nothing stood out as the origin of an uncomfortable stare.
“Everything okay?” Gianna asked.
I’d stopped dancing while I’d scanned the club. “Yeah, everything’s fine.” With another quick scan, I searched for trouble, unable to shake off the sense that something was wrong.
