She spat a venomous look at him and then turned to me. “After we feed, let’s leave Salem and start over somewhere else. Just the two of us. Tonight.”

“Okay.” I followed her down the stairs to the entrance. As I turned over my shoulder to make sure they weren’t following me—again—someone tackled me.

Chapter 17

Nova

Cassandra entered the library carrying a small, corked bottle that contained a purple bubbling liquid. She handed it to me. “Keep it safe.”

I took it and examined it. “Do you think it’s really going to work?”

“Have faith, Nova.” She raised her chin. “Remember the power of manifestation. Visualize the outcome you want. It may help you find the answers when the time comes.”

“Answers to what questions?” Her vague response didn’t assure me of success. Did I have any chance of saving him?

She slanted her head. “Questions that may arise.”

“Go on,” Cassandra said. “Pandora’s finishing up brewing another option as a potential backup plan.”

I swallowed. That didn’t sound well, but I didn’t hesitate to ask more questions. We needed to hustle.

As Gianna and I headed to my car, Lucas called.

“Where are you?” he asked.

“Coming now.”

I put the phone on speaker and jumped into the driver’s seat of my blue Mini Cooper. I’d rented one when I’d first come to Salem and loved the compact style and whippy drive. Gianna climbed in the passenger seat and held my phone while I started the car.

“Is Zoe there?” I sped away with screeching tires.

“Yes.” Lucas exhaled. “We’ve run into an issue.”

My muscles tensed, even my butt cheeks tightened as if bracing for the news. “What kind of issue?”

I accelerated down a narrow road and took a quick turn on the way to the address.

“More like a scuffle,” Lucas clarified.

“With Diego and Diana?” Gianna asked.

“Yes,” Sebastian explained. “We thought we were breaking through to him somewhat, but then Diana exerted her influence over him and convinced him to go into this vampire affair. We had no choice but to tackle him. She didn’t respond well and flipped out, drawing some blood. She ran inside, luring Diego with her. She’s going to try to leave Salem with him tonight.”

My heart plummeted. “No.” After two more heavy breaths, I asked, “Can you go in?”

“We tried,” Lucas said. “No luck. It’s a den full of vampires, and they don’t want shifters sullying their party. Zoe stepped in using her credentials at the Network to talk to the head vampire. Sebastian and I are searching the exterior for a way in.”

“Even if we find one, it might be suicidal,” Sebastian added. “Vampires don’t like shifters messing with their affairs.”

“Especially when it comes to feeding,” Lucas added.

“We’re almost there,” Gianna said.

Seconds pounded like a ticking bomb while we approached. The giveaway that we’d found the right building was Lucas in dragon form hovering above the roof, the outline of his flapping wings silhouetted by the moon. It had an orange-red tinge tonight. I sighed. The full moon ignited a feral flame in both humans and supes.

My phone’s audio navigation system indicated I’d arrived at my destination. I turned into the parking lot behind the brick building and searched for an available spot. No luck.

“Damn it!” This gathering must have been pretty popular—and full of hungry vampires. Lovely.
