Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know I should focus on the good and not worry about things I couldn’t change. I took three deep inhales, held them, and exhaled slowly. Before I returned inside, I walked along the flower beds. When I reached the section of herbs, I bent down. I crushed some lemon thyme in between my fingers and sniffed. I loved the scent.

Back inside the kitchen, I cleaned up. Lucas was gone from the living room. I went up the stairs and knocked on Diego’s door.

“Who is it?” Diego asked.

“It’s me,” I said.

He threw the door open and stared at me, his blue eyes piercing me with suspicion. “Who are you?”

Chapter 10

Nova

Irecoiled. “What’s going on with you, Diego?” Attempting to brush it off, I entered his room.

He narrowed his gaze, moving in a semi-circle as if tracking me. “How do you know my name and what are you doing in my room?”

Wicked bats and flying monkeys. Why was he looking at me like that and acting like he didn’t know me?

I laughed. “Oh, I see. You want to role play.” I tapped my forehead with my palm. “Got it.”

That was one suggestion I’d read about when searching for ways couples could try new things to spark more excitement in the bedroom. Maybe my shenanigans had inspired Diego to seek new ideas. Some of the ways were to pretend to be different people, like a handyman and a homeowner, or a boss and an employee, or even the more forbidden aspects between a professor and a student. One of the popular ones was to meet as strangers at a bar. When you pretend to meet each other for the first time, you’re invigorated by the excitement of getting to know each other.

“Role play?” He blinked at me.

I nodded to myself. “Yeah, I’m on board, baby.” We could figure out how to work it here in his bedroom. I’d pretend I was a stranger who had never been here before.

I glanced around his room. Diego went for a minimalist style with dark furniture that wasn’t cluttered. The bed was made with a black comforter and gray pillows. “You have a nice room. I like a man who keeps things—clean.” I winced inside. That wasn’t a great innuendo.

He grunted. “I’m wondering what you’re doing in it.”

He wanted to play hard-to-get? Interesting.

Placing my hand on my chest, I leaned forward and introduced myself in a sultry tone. “I’m Nova. What’s your name, big boy?” Oh, maybe I should have used a fake name to go with a new persona. Too late now.

Get out of your head, Nova, so you don’t kill the sexy vibe!

His dark brows pulled together, and expression darkened. “You already know my name. And I want to know how that’s possible since we haven’t met.”

I stepped back, pressing my lips together. That reaction wasn’t what I expected. Maybe he wanted me to be more assertive. I wouldn’t picture him to be the one who wanted to be dominated, but maybe it was a secret kink of his. No shame in that.

“Oh, don’t be shy.” I strutted over to him and inhaled his scent, a wild and musky masculine aroma. “You smell so good.” I ran my hand down the front of his chest. “And you’re so hard. So sexy.”

Diego grabbed my wrist and yanked it off him. “Don’t touch me, lady.” He stared down at me, anger pulsing off of him. “Did Lucas or Sebastian put you up to this?”

“No, of course not,” I protested. Tears pierced my eyes. What was going on? I hated seeing him like this. It was like he was an entirely different person, a stranger who didn’t know me.

He steered me out of his room and down the stairs. “I don’t know who you are, but I’m not playing this game.”

“Diego, stop. This is taking things too far.” I tried to use my weight to slow my progression through the living room.

His strength dwarfed mine, and it didn’t take much effort for him to drag me by the wrist to the front door.

“No, I want no part of this.” He opened the door. “You barge your way into my house and into my bedroom. That’s so out of line.” He nudged me by my lower back, leading me outside. “Get the hell out of my house.”

He punctuated his point by slamming the door.
