Happy tears clouded my vision, and I had to blink a few times before I could see clearly again. “Oh Diego.”
He motioned to the ring box that I still clutched in my hand. “Do you like the ring?”
“I love it. It’s so beautiful.”
He exhaled. “Oh good. I thought it was you but wasn’t sure. It didn’t help that Lucas kept throwing me off with him being distracted by sparkly things.”
“Did the guys go with you?”
“Lucas did.” Diego groaned. “Remind me never to take a dragon around shiny objects. I had to ask him to leave.”
We laughed and then embraced again.
“Wait, I have to put this on your finger.” Diego pulled the ring out of the box and slid it on. It was a tad loose but perfect.
I lifted my hand and turned it under the light, admiring the dazzle. “I absolutely love it!”
Susan came over and congratulated us. She touched her necklace and exhaled. “Oh, I thought I might have blown it.”
“You did great, Susan,” Diego declared. “Thanks for your help to pull this off.”
She beamed with a proud smile. “It was my absolute pleasure.”
After a few more minutes, she said, “I’ll leave you love birds alone.”
Diego picked up the book and flashed a sheepish look before he placed it back on the table. “Sorry, I destroyed a book. I know how that makes book lovers want to pull out a pitchfork.”
I laughed. “You get a pass in this case.” I ran my fingers over the hardcover. “I will treasure this book always. It was the perfect proposal. Very romantic.”
He dropped his head back and exhaled. “Good. I’ve been thinking about what to do.” He rolled one shoulder. “Now you know why I’ve been acting strange the last few weeks.”
I shook my head, laughing at how badly I’d misread the signs. “Wow, I totally jumped to the wrong conclusion.” After I blew out a breath, I said, “So who knows? The guys and Gianna?”
Diego’s mouth formed a hard line. “I told Sebastian not to say a word yet. I’m sure Gianna would almost burst if she had to keep that a secret around you.”
“You thought right. If she started acting all giddy with excitement, I’d know something was up. I’d make her tell me.” I raised my hand, admiring the sparkle again. “I can’t wait to tell her the exciting news.”
When I lowered my hand, a woman staring from outside the window jarred me. I blinked, and she was gone.
Was it?
No, it couldn’t be.
Could it? Was Diego’s ex watching us from outside?
Nah, I brushed that off. I was only on edge about that because he mentioned she was here in town.
“Is everything okay?” Diego turned and followed where I stared outside.
It had to be a trick of the light and my wariness with her arrival. Besides, I’d only seen her once on Halloween, which was many moons ago. I wasn’t going to let a phantom of my imagination ruin the best night of my life.
I faced my fiancé and smiled. “Everything is perfect.”
Chapter 7
Nova
Gianna sprinting toward me blocked my view the moment I entered the guys’ apartment with Diego. She wore a navy-blue sailor-style dress and had her dark hair pulled back into a low ponytail.
