He searched me from the head down. “Are you okay? What happened? Is Zoe okay?”
“We’re fine,” I assured him. “It all occurred so fast, I’m not even sure I know what happened. I shifted to dragon form to fight it. Zoe had some bad ass weapons. Somehow, between the two of us, we managed to restrain it.”
“Damn.” Sebastian’s voice dropped with a wonder. “Where is it now?”
“A team from the Network came and hauled it away. Probably locked up somewhere.”
Sebastian cocked his head. “I know how terrifying it is to face one of those soulless monsters. How are you doing?”
“Hanging in there.” I dragged my fingers through my hair. “It all seems like a bad dream.” I rolled my shoulders back in an attempt to shake it off. “Zoe is coming over soon, and we’re going out.”
He picked up the bowl and whipped the egg mixture with more vigor. “I wish I could have caught one of those fuckers who tormented Gianna. But I wouldn’t lock it up. I’d rip it to pieces using tooth and claw.” Sebastian’s jaw hardened as his voice lowered to a seething tone.
I crossed my arms and grinned at him. “That demon is lucky you weren’t there last night.”
“One day.” He nodded with a grim expression. “One day, I’ll make them pay for what they did to her.” His lips curled with distaste. “I’ll never let anyone hurt her and get away with it.”
“Man, don’t go all feral on me,” I teased and pointed to the stovetop. “Not until you finish making breakfast, at least.”
Sebastian brought his gaze to the pan. “Shit.” He flipped the omelet that was cooking. “Ah good, it’s not overcooked. I can’t think of those fuckers without a yearning for revenge burning through me.”
“As long as you don’t burn my breakfast,” I said to lighten him up. “It smells too good.”
He raised a brow. “What do you think I am, an amateur?” He pulled out a couple of plates. “I can make them with my eyes closed.”
“Challenge not offered,” I said.
Once our omelets were scooped onto plates, we carried them to the table with our mugs of coffee. The next song on the album played, “Don’t Worry, Baby,” one of my favorite songs of theirs. Sebastian filled a glass with orange juice and then sat across from me at the dining room table.
I took a bite of the omelet and moaned. “Good stuff.”
“Better with peppers,” he noted.
After we ate a few bites in silence, Sebastian washed it down with a gulp of orange juice. “Where are you off to today?”
“Not sure yet. Zoe is going to come pick me up soon, and we’re going to spend the day together.”
Sebastian cocked his head and asked, “What’s going on with you two?”
I avoided his probing gaze. “I like her.”
“And?” he prodded, raising his fork an inch.
“And what? That’s all there is.”
“Nothing more about her scent? Any more indications that she might be the one?”
Yes, my dragon replied inside. She’s our mate.
I squared my jaw. “I’m taking things one step at a time.”
Although my dragon was still fixated on the idea that Zoe was our mate, I didn’t know what to do with that. Sure, I liked her. I enjoyed spending time with her, more than I ever had with a woman before. My protests weren’t as loud as when my dragon first declared it, but I still wasn’t ready to believe we could be mates. That connection wasn’t something to take lightly. It was massive and permanent.
I ate a couple more bites before asking him, “What about you? What are you doing today?”
“First up is going to Gianna’s and letting her know what’s going on.”
“If Nova hasn’t heard about it already and told her.”
