She leapt out of the ocean and parallel to the spiraling portal, her magnificent tail propelling her. She dragged the mesh over the opening. One part of it managed to cover the gaping hole but then slipped down. With it went my hopes.
I wasn’t ready to give up. “Let’s try again.”
We did and a bit more remained across the portal this time, yet it draped down back to the sea once more.
A large being swooped down. It was Lucas. What was he doing?
He nodded his dragon head at me. I wasn’t sure what he meant but figured we’d try once more. When Gianna and I launched our third attempt to cover the portal, Lucas flew down. He captured one part of the mesh with his claws and carried it across the opening, covering it.
Gianna and I cheered.
“It worked!” she exclaimed.
I raised my hand up to Lucas. “Thank you.”
He nodded and hovered nearby. When the next demon attempted to climb through, it reached for the mesh and howled. It pulled its hand back. Yes, it was working!
Lucas flew up and returned to the battle overhead where the gargoyles had joined fighting the demon horde. Gianna helped me swim back to shore.
Sebastian in wolf form fought the demon Sven. Diego hissed with extended claws and fangs at one of the demons. One with black hair barked commands to the others. Nova, Pandora, and Cassandra fought among others from the Network. Blasts of light and magic fired across the sky as the battle raged on in the sky and on land.
By the time I could reach the sea bottom, my legs trembled. I still had several feet before reaching the shore.
Only two demons remained on land in the fight, Sven and the one with black hair. Gianna splashed as she shifted back to human form and stumbled forward on her legs. The swim clearly hadn’t zapped her energy as it had done to me. She then ran naked across the sand and sprung on Sven from behind, taking him by surprise. In wolf form, Sebastian leapt onto the demon and tore out his throat. Gianna pulled out the dagger. I turned my head as she finished the demon off. When I stumbled onto shore, I leaned forward, panting hard.
A demon landed in front of Nova. “I found a way back.” He strode with a forceful stride toward her. “And you’re the first person I wanted to see, Nova.”
Nova raised her wand. “Stay back or I’ll take you out like last time, Andre.”
Andre? The demon she thought she’d destroyed or banished was back?
I reached for my blaster. Shit, it was gone. It must have fallen out as we swam back from the portal.
Diego stepped beside her and hissed. “Get away from her, demon.”
“Useless corpse.” Andre shot a bolt of energy from his hands at Diego.
Diego moved out of the blast range too quickly for me to see. That was close.
Nova fired her wand at Andre. He blocked the blast using his hand, turning it toward the sky. The energy from her spell rained back down on the beach.
“Watch out!” I shouted.
We scrambled away from the falling bolts.
“You were the one behind this from the beginning, weren’t you?” I accused Andre.
He turned to me with a sneer. “Aren’t you a little small to be fighting this battle, elf?”
I raised my chin. “Aren’t you a little outnumbered to be making threats, demon?”
Nova, Diego, Gianna, Sebastian, and more from the Network formed a circle around Andre. Gianna had wrapped a cape around her.
“I’m immortal.” Andre laughed. “There could be a thousand of you, and it doesn’t matter. Becausenoneof you matter.”
Although many supernatural beings, including elves and shifters, had longer lifespans, Diego was the only immortal one among us. But even he could be killed.
And I’d spend a lifetime ensuring demons could, too. Too bad I’d lost my weapons in the sea.
