I should have known she’d want to know more about that. After all, she practically set me up with him.
“Yes.” I poured some milk into my mug.
“And?” She leaned against a table and crossed her arms.
“And what? There’s not much to tell. We hung out.”
“Hung out, eh?” She rubbed her hands together and her eyes gleamed. “Doing what?”
I spooned some sugar into my mug. “We went into Boston. Ate. You know, the usual hanging out stuff.”
“Come on, Zoe. I’m not going to let you offthateasy. You’ve never mentioned going out with a guy or ‘hanging out,’” she added with air quotes. “Was it a date?”
“Kind of.” I rolled a shoulder. “But then we hung out with Nova, Gianna, and his roommates.”
Pandora groaned. “Okay, I guess you’re not going to spill anything else.”
Definitely not the intimate details. I was still far too uptight to reveal any of that. Besides, we were at work. I needed to steer this boat around to that conversation and away from my suddenly interesting love life. “More importantly, what’s going on here?”
Pandora slumped against the wall. “Making some headway.”
“Oh, how?”
“The woman who he’d attacked came in and gave a report.”
“She did?” That was huge. I’d looked for her the night she disappeared and had been kicking myself for not being able to find her and ensure she was safe.
“Yes. She’s a witch. She thinks he was trying to steal her magic.”
“Oh, no.”
Pandora nodded with a knowing look. “Unfortunately, yes.”
I exhaled. “Just like the fall.”
Pandora agreed with a grim nod. “I’m telling all the witches to be especially careful.”
Would we ever get rid of these damn demons?
Pandora pointed down to the floor. “The demon is still locked down in the hold. He’s not telling much, but we’re working on it. Cassandra is working her magic. She’s been playing on his arrogance to get him to spill more. I think she’ll make a breakthrough soon.”
“Oh, I hope so.”
Cassandra was our best interrogator. She could likely get a mime to give a soliloquy.
Once she left my office, I stared out my window, trying to piece together any new info with what I already knew. Fuckin’ demons.
My phone buzzed. It was Gianna. That was odd. We weren’t on a call-and-chat level so that meant it might be something else.
“Hey, Gianna.”
“Zoe. Last night was great, wasn’t it?”
For more reasons than just the dinner and game. “Indeed.” My question lingered for why she’d call.
“I’ve been thinking. Since we’ve established that I may be a demon magnet, I’m hoping you can help me.”
I spun in my chair to face the desk once more. “How?”
