My mother exhaled, but other than that she didn’t show any reaction to my vitriol. No regret, no guilt.

"I'm here now, Gianna. It’s time we get to know each other. You can better connect with your siren side.” She tightened her lips. “I’m sure you’ve realized you’re not like all these humans.” She motioned around the club but didn’t break eye contact. “I hope we can get together again while I’m in town,” she said.

I arched a brow. “And how long might that be?”

She rubbed her petite nose. “If all goes well, we’ll be here for some time.”

“If what goes well?”

She shrugged. “Oh, you know, adjusting here.”

She was evasive in some ways yet provided answers to some of my questions. Did I want to learn more about this world? Would it prove that I didn’t belong in either the human or siren one, leaving me somewhere trapped in between?

Belonging nowhere.

She handed me a piece of paper and stood. “Several of us are meeting at the beach house next week. I hope you’ll join us?”

“I’ll think about it,” I replied. No way was I promising this woman anything.

I read what was on the note. It was an address near the shore. “Wait,” I called out.

When I glanced up, she was gone. Damn. I had many more questions, but they’d have to wait.

Chapter 7

Sebastian

While at work preparing fine cuts of steak at the restaurant, I thought about Gianna. A couple of days had passed, and I still couldn’t yank her out of my mind. The desire for her hadn't faded.

Because she's our mate,my wolf insisted.

He had not stopped reminding me of this fact, and how we had to claim her.

How is that even possible? A woman like Gianna did not want to be claimed. She didn’t want to have any sort of relationship. That would be an issue. Because now that I had a taste of her, all I wanted was to have more.

After prowling through the house another day, I decided I’d held off enough on contacting her. If I couldn’t see her, I at least had to hear her voice.

In my room, I sat on the bed, still detecting a hint of her scent in the room. I called her. After the initial greetings, I asked, "How have you been?"

Gianna groaned. "I met up with my mother yesterday."

“And?” I prodded.

“It was quite a mind bend.”

“How about I make you some comfort food? Homemade mac and cheese is always good.” My go to was in any difficult situation was offering food. “Actually, anything with cheese is soothing. Whatever you want though, I can whip it up."

Gianna exhaled. "That’s a nice offer, Sebastian, but remember what we discussed?”

“What?”

“It sounds like a date, and I’m not interested in dating."

My stomach fell. I forced the words out that no guy wanted to say when it came to a woman he was interested in. "Just as friends."

She arched one of her brows. "Friends, eh?"

"Sure. We have mutual friends, so why not?"
